What are tapeworms?

It is definitely an unpleasant subject, but many people suffer from them, so they take a great interest in them. Tapeworms, belonging to the class of flatworms, parasitize in the intestines. Since tapeworms live in the digestive tract of other "host" animals (because these animals feed on parasites), they feed on food that the "host" has already partially digested.

The "hosts" of flatworms are almost always vertebrates, such as fish, dogs, or humans. Tapeworms have suction cups on their heads, through which they attach to the walls of the intestines. They have no sense organs - no eyes and ears. Tapeworms have atrophied muscles and a primitive nervous system. They lack a mouth and digestive tract. Food is absorbed by the surface of the body.

There are many varieties of tapeworms. Their bodies can be from 0,1 mm to 9 m in length. Tapeworms come in a variety of shapes. They can be fused or consist of a chain of segmented parts. These parts grow one after the other, always from the head down. Flatworms do not have a specific gender. Each adult worm is male and female at the same time. How do flatworms enter the human digestive tract? This can happen in the following way.

Flatworms lay fertilized eggs. The pigs then eat them. Larvae are hatched from eggs in the intestines of pigs. Inside the pig, these small larvae travel through the intestinal wall to other parts of the pig's body. When the larva settles, it forms a hard cyst. Let's say a person has consumed poorly cooked pork (correct processing of pork can kill the larvae in the cyst). Under the influence of digestive juices, the larvae are released from the cyst. Then they stick to the intestines, develop - a person acquires flatworms!

The harm of flatworms lies in the fact that they absorb part of the nutrition received by the "owner" and release toxic substances. Flatworms, except in rare cases, do not lead to the death of a person. Now there are drugs that remove flatworms from the intestines.

Which monarch was found tattooed with the inscription: Death to kings!?

Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte began his career as a simple soldier in the French royal army. During the revolution, he quickly advanced to division commander, and under Napoleon became a marshal. The next step was an invitation to the successors to the Swedish king, and in 1818 Bernadotte officially took the Swedish throne under the name of Charles XIV Johan, and the Bernadotte dynasty still remains ruling. In 1844, he died, and during preparations for embalming, a tattoo was found on Bernadotte's arm: "Death to kings!".

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Viable artificial lungs created for the first time 07.08.2018

Scientists at the University of Texas at Galveston have grown lungs for the first time and successfully transplanted them into pigs, which survived for several weeks after the operation.

Healthy blood vessels developed in the tissues of the transplanted lungs, as a result of which the organs were able to engraft. In previous experiments, lungs transplanted into rodents stopped functioning within hours. In addition, the organs are grown from the recipient's own cells, which reduces the risk of rejection due to the immune system.

During the experiment, scientists using a mixture of detergents and sugar separated cells from the lungs of donor pigs, resulting in a 3D scaffold of intercellular proteins. In it, scientists began to grow a culture of cells isolated from recipient animals. The lungs grew for 30 days in a bioreactor tank filled with nutrient solutions. Ready organs were transplanted to four pigs to replace the left lung.

Animals were sacrificed 10 hours, two weeks, one month and two months after the operation. They underwent an autopsy to assess how well the organs took root. During the entire experiment, the pigs did not receive immunosuppressants, but the scientists did not reveal signs of rejection of the transplanted organ in any of the cases. At the same time, the researchers note that the artificial organs were not functional because they did not connect to the pulmonary arteries.

Scientists hope that in the future they will be able to improve the method and get full-fledged organs. In the case of transplanting an artificial lung to a human, 3D printing can be used to create a framework.
