What are enzymes?

The body of every animal and plant is, in fact, a chemical plant. If the body does not undergo constant chemical changes, then life is virtually impossible. We can eat, breathe, move because chemical changes occur in cells, tissues and organs.

Here is an example of a chemical life process. You eat a piece of bread, porridge or potatoes. The starch of this food is converted into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream. There, glucose is burned with the help of oxygen that you breathe in, and the body receives energy.

Chemists have determined that such processes occurring in any organism are possible due to a small amount of protein. Protein is made by living cells. These cells are called enzymes. Enzymes perform a specific function. Each enzyme contributes to only one chemical process.

Chemical processes, as already mentioned, occur in all living organisms. When grains of wheat, barley, or other grain begin to grow, they produce enzymes. Enzymes convert the starch in grains into glucose. This process is called malting.

The enzyme involved in this process is called diastase. Although we know what processes take place with the help of enzymes, their nature is not yet clear. Enzymes are chemical compounds that always contain carbon, hydrogen, sometimes oxygen and nitrogen.

There are a huge number of different enzymes, but only a few of them can be isolated from the juices of plants and animals. It is curious that enzymes are produced only by living cells and can perform chemical reactions even without living tissue.

Why is an astronaut in a spacesuit depicted on a carving in a 12th-century Spanish cathedral?

On the carving of the Cathedral of Salamanca (Spain), built in the 12th century, you can find the figure of an astronaut in a spacesuit. There is no mysticism here: the figure was added in 1992 during the restoration by one of the masters as a signature (he chose the astronaut as a symbol of the 20th century).

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Drones to search for people lost in the forest 31.12.2020

Scientists at the Johannes Kepler University (Linz, Austria) have developed a new method based on machine learning technologies that should radically increase the efficiency of finding people lost in areas with dense vegetation.

Today, if it is necessary to urgently find people lost in the forest, search and rescue teams usually use helicopters or drones. Rescuers fly over the area where the missing are most likely to be found. The problem is that in conditions of dense vegetation it is almost impossible to see human figures in the thickets. Thermal imagers help a little in this situation, allowing you to "see" through the crowns of trees. But here, too, there are significant limitations. Unfortunately, in some cases, thermal imaging is also not particularly effective, for example, when the sun heats trees to a temperature close to human body temperature.

However, as researchers have proven, using artificial intelligence technologies can partially solve this problem. A special machine learning algorithm developed by the team collects a group of images of a certain area obtained from a helicopter or drone, and then combines them in such a way that they form a thermal image with a much higher resolution than a single thermal imager. After processing, the resulting images had a significantly greater depth of field, as a result, the trees in the images looked blurry, and the silhouettes of people lying on the ground became more recognizable.

To create a training AI base, volunteers were photographed using drones in different positions on the ground, which made it possible to ensure the accuracy of detecting people at the level of 87-95%.

To train the AI system, the researchers had to create their own database of images. They used drones to take pictures of volunteers on the ground in a variety of positions.

During testing of the AI system, the accuracy of detecting people in dense forest was at the level of 87-95%, compared to 25% for traditional thermal imaging. The researchers suggest that their system is ready for use by search and rescue teams, and can also be used by law enforcement, military or wildlife groups.
