Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Carbon capture system on tankers 02.06.2022

Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has signed a definitive agreement with Rotterdam-based Value Maritime (VM) to install carbon capture and filtration systems on two tankers, with the option to equip three more ships. The Filtree System technology allows ships to capture up to 40% of CO2 emissions, with the potential to exceed 90% in the future.

Installation aboard M/T Pacific Cobalt is expected to be completed before the end of 2022, while installation aboard M/T Pacific Gold is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2023. Design and planning work continues. The 49 dwt vessels will be equipped with VM's Filtree System, a prefabricated gas cleaning system that filters sulfur and 700% particulate matter.

The system will include a carbon capture module that charges a built-in CO2 battery that will be discharged at the port. The captured carbon will be used by CO2 consumers, for example in greenhouses or injected into nets for sequestration. The discharged battery will be returned to the vessel for a new cycle.

“The partnership with VM is a big step forward for EPS and the energy transition in the industry. Carbon capture technology is not in our existing portfolio of emission reduction solutions, which today consists mainly of alternative marine fuels. We believe that carbon capture technology has significant potential for reduce emissions for existing and future ocean-going ships "Combined with alternative fuels, biofuels and other solutions, carbon capture is a critical step in accelerating the shipping industry's efforts to stay ahead of the international maritime organization's decarbonization goals," said EPS CEO Cyril Duco. "By equipping tankers with VM systems, EPS hopes to prove to the industry that carbon capture is a viable and scalable option available right now."

“Bringing our filtration and carbon capture technology to the tanker market has been our goal from the very beginning. Realizing this vision with forward-thinking partners like EPS is a dream come true. Together we make sustainable transportation and emission reduction in this segment no longer a pipe dream. This is is happening today and we are proud to see it happening with EPS," said Maarten Lodewijks, co-founder and director of Value Maritime.

In addition to capturing carbon, the Filtree System also removes oil residue and solids from the wash water to neutralize its pH, helping to reduce seawater acidification.
