What is biology?

Do you like to read detective stories or watch them on TV? What makes them so exciting is that they keep you on your toes all the time. You want to know who committed the crime, how he did it, why. But the world around us is also full of various secrets.

Why do animals behave the way they do? What makes plants grow in particular ways? Why does our body act the way it does? Man has always wanted to solve these mysteries of life. And just as in the case of a detective investigating a criminal case, the first thing to do is to collect the facts. The collection and study of these facts was carried out by natural history. Nowadays this science is called biology. This word comes from two Greek words: "bios" which means "life" and "logos" which means "science".

Thus, biology is the study of all organisms, plants and animals. Their forms, activities, functions and their environment are studied. But today detective biologists are not satisfied with simply collecting random facts. They are trying to establish connections between them, some kind of relationship. For example, they are interested in finding out the connections of a person with millions of living beings surrounding him. They want to know what impact these living beings have on human development. Biologists are interested in the greatest mystery: how in general life first appeared on Earth and what forms it had.

Therefore, they study all the conditions necessary for life. And just like a detective bureau maintains an archive, they try to classify all the organisms that exist on the planet. In search of answers to their questions, biologists resort to the help of nature. They descend to the icy depths of the oceans, climb to the highest peaks in search of clues. They pave the way through the impenetrable jungle and spend hours looking through microscopes.

Sometimes they perform strange experiments to get to the secrets of life. Biology is a very complex science. It is divided into two parts: botany, which studies plants, and zoology, which studies animals. And each of these sections consists in turn of dozens of subsections.

How did a French engineer save the Great Pyramids from dismantling for building materials?

Louis Linant de Belfon, before becoming the chief engineer for the construction of the Suez Canal, commanded the construction of dams and the laying of irrigation canals on the Nile. To optimize the work, the ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, suggested using a stone from the Great Pyramids. Belfon was against it, but he understood that in case of refusal, the pasha would hire another engineer. In order to save the Pyramids, he provided fictitious calculations, according to which it turned out that it would be cheaper to extract material from the quarries.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

To revive, just add water 16.08.2001

Many microorganisms, some unicellular and even multicellular animals and plants are able to dry out and tolerate the absence of water for a long time, and then come to life as soon as water appears.

Most of these organisms use the so-called glycoproteins to protect their cells - mucous substances, which are a combination of carbohydrate and protein. But human cells without water die after a few seconds.

Biologists from the Genomics Technical Center in Blacksburg (USA), by adding to human kidney cells a slimy glycoprotein derived from nostoc algae (it is part of the mud and can come to life after drying in the sun), were able to dry human cells at room temperature and then revive them . Eight days later, when water was added to the powder from the cells, half of them came to life and resumed division.

Why are such experiments carried out? Of course, not in order to get an "instant person." Human cells are used to detect poisons and contaminants in drinking water, to test the safety of new drugs, nutritional supplements and cosmetics.

It is convenient to have the material for such analyzes on hand in the form of a dry powder, suitable for revitalization at any time.
