Where did the rings around some planets come from?

The outer giant planets - Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and, probably, Neptune are surrounded by rings rotating around them, consisting of numerous fragments of stone and ice. The shape of the ring, its size and distance from the planet are determined by the force of mutual attraction between the planet and the particles that make up the ring.

Visible even through a spyglass, the rings of Saturn are thousands of small satellites orbiting the planet in the same plane.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where and when were screenings of the film in cinemas accompanied by scents?

For the release of the 1960 film "The Smell of Mystery," several American theaters installed a Smell-O-Vision system to accompany what was happening on the screen with smells. A tube was connected to each spectator seat, and smells were blown out of the tubes centrally throughout the hall, and the system worked without the participation of an operator at predetermined time intervals. However, the first screenings caused a lot of negative feedback: some viewers complained about a strong hiss during the presentation of smells, others that the smells were several seconds late relative to the action on the screen. These problems were later resolved, but rumors about the poor performance of the equipment, coupled with negative reviews about the film itself, had already spread, and Smell-O-Vision was never used again.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Coffee saves from cirrhosis of the liver 25.02.2016

There is growing evidence in the medical community that coffee is healthier than we previously thought. It reduces the risk of developing type XNUMX diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Researchers from the University of Southampton have found that coffee can also reduce the chance of cirrhosis of the liver.

According to statistics, more than a million people die every year from cirrhosis of the liver. It is usually caused by long-term and excessive alcohol consumption, but it can also be caused by hepatitis infections, immune diseases, diabetes, and even obesity.

The results of the study showed that caffeine consumption has a protective effect on the liver: the analysis shows that two cups of coffee a day cut the risk of liver cirrhosis, including alcoholic cirrhosis, by half. Moreover, this reduction in risk also applies to mortality. Statistical indicators improve with the increase in coffee consumption. For example, four cups a day reduces the risk of cirrhosis by 65%.

Given the complex chemistry of coffee, it's hard to say exactly how caffeine protects the liver. Scientists need more experiments that specifically address this issue.
