In some countries there is an expression "died like a dodo". Or, when a person acts stupidly, he is called a dodo. Let's find out why the dodo is a symbol of something withering and stupid.

Hundreds of years ago, on the island of Mauritius and other islands of the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, there really lived a bird called the dodo. She had no enemies to protect herself from, which is why she did not develop any of the abilities that other birds have. She couldn't fly, or run fast, or defend herself.

As a result, she turned into a rather unusual creature. The bird was a relative of the pigeon family, but there was no resemblance in sight. She had a large body, round and fat, like two turkeys. And the legs were so short that they could barely support the weight.

The tail of the dodo was only a small bundle of fluffy feathers, absolutely useless. The wings of the bird (since there was no need to fly) became very small and could not perform this function at all. The head of the dodo was very large and ended in an unimaginable hook-shaped beak. The only way the bird could move was to waddle slowly.

In 1507, Portuguese explorers landed on the island of Mauritius and discovered this strange creature. Since the bird looked funny and couldn't defend itself, they named it duodo, which means simpleton. They discovered that it was possible to beat birds with clubs. Their nests were in a heap of grass, where they laid only one large egg.

Later, people brought pigs to the island, which destroyed the eggs of dodos and their chicks, and by 1681 the bird was completely exterminated.

In Germany, a prototype of a new power source was presented. Scientists have developed batteries that work due to the vital activity of bacteria. Experts assure that for the functioning of the device it is only necessary to maintain the necessary conditions for microorganisms.

Scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology presented "live" batteries, which became a reality through the development of a special nanocomposite material. Its structure makes it possible to streamline the movement of electrons in a living microorganism and make the life of the colony manageable.

The existence of exoelectrogenic bacteria has been known for a long time, however, before that, it was not possible to ensure the maintenance of their life. Project leader Christoph M. Niemeyer announced the creation of a porous hydrogel consisting of carbon nanotubes and silica nanoparticles. According to him, Shewanella oneidensis bacteria and a nutrient medium for them were later added to the design.

Experiments have shown that the growth of a colony of microorganisms contributes to an increase in the flow of electrons. The stability of the battery in the experiment was several days. The experts also noted that the batteries are programmable; to disable them, it is enough just to add a substance to the environment that destroys DNA molecules.
