Why is an owl called wise? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? Why is an owl called wise? When birds have something unusual in their origin or habits, superstitious judgments often arise about this. The owl has a very strange appearance and is very different in its behavior from other birds. That is why it has acquired all sorts of legends. Did you know that in ancient times it was considered a bad luck bird? The Romans hated the owl so much that when they saw and caught it in the city during the daytime, they burned it, and publicly threw the ashes into the Tiber! However, in England and elsewhere she was often referred to as "the wise old owl". This is more likely due to her appearance, and not the presence of some kind of higher mind. Her huge, star-like eyes seem to be looking at you in great thought. In fact, these eyes are very sensitive to daylight. In addition, they are so located that the owl has to turn its entire head to change the direction of its gaze. One species or another of owls live in all parts of the world, even in the Arctic, where its plumage is snow-white. Owls hunt only at night, they have very sharp eyesight and hearing. At night, the bird is able to catch the barely noticeable movements of the mouse - its favorite food. She grabs prey with her paws, her sharp claws pierce the victim like a trap. The bird preys on small animals such as squirrels and rabbits. Clumsy as it may seem, the owl flies very fast. Her feathers are very light and seem to be fringed, so she flies silently. The plumage is very fluffy, which makes the bird appear larger than it really is. This is the only bird whose head does not look like a bird at all! Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: What are reactive streams? Today we often hear the word "jet", and you think that the concept of "jet streams" in this case is associated with jet aircraft. But this is absolutely not true! Jet streams are part of the wind system around the Earth, so let's start with the concept of "wind". Winds are currents of air moving parallel to the surface of the earth and at a short distance from it. The movement of winds is mainly due to the presence of areas with different pressures, so winds blow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. On a global (rather than local) scale, we can say that, in general, cold air moves from the poles to the equator, and warm air moves from the equator to the poles. These are not uniform flows, but turbulent jets of air. Different conditions affect the weather in each area. The local heat source can influence the pressure value. The direction of the wind in the area is influenced by the location of the land, water surface, mountains. And finally, in some areas there are areas where there is almost constant high pressure. These areas are called "anticyclones", and they determine the direction of the winds in a given region. So, you can imagine in general why the wind blows and what affects it. But all this refers to the winds that blow in the lower layers of the atmosphere. As you know, around the Earth there is an atmosphere that extends to an altitude of 2800 km. In the upper atmosphere, there are other wind conditions. The winds here blow at a higher speed than at the surface of the Earth. At an altitude of about 9 km, the wind speed reaches such a value that it is called "jet stream". The speed of such a flow reaches 200-400 km per hour.
