Where did the name of the women's bikini swimsuit come from?

A very open women's bathing suit, consisting of a tight bra and swimming trunks, got its name from the name of the atoll (coral island) Bikini in the Pacific Ocean, on which four days before the presentation of the novelty, the United States conducted nuclear tests.

The advertising slogan that accompanied the release of the new model used the parallels between the name of the previous model, and nuclear disintegration: "Bikini - a divided Atom!".

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How do spiders travel great distances through the air?

Spiders, especially young light individuals, are capable of ballooning. Having gone out into the open area, the spider lifts its abdomen up and releases several threads, from which it usually makes a web. But in this case, the threads form a semblance of a parachute and allow the spider to glide in the air currents. Usually the range of such a journey does not exceed a few meters, but sometimes spiders can be carried very far, which allowed them to colonize any corner of the land on the planet and the most remote islands.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Spectroscopy in a cave 13.11.2011

French archaeologists, in collaboration with physicists from the University of Pretoria (South Africa), are studying wall paintings in caves, created about 3000 years ago by local Bushmen tribes.

Scientists delivered a spectrometer to the caves located near the city of Durban to determine the composition of the mineral paints of ancient drawings. In the future, archaeologists hope to use a laser analyzer to find out which organic components were added to the composition of the paints for better adhesion to the stone. Presumably this is blood, fat, egg yolk and possibly snake venom.
