Why and how did Oedipus become blind?

The Theban king Oedipus and his mother Jocasta lived happily married for about twenty years, being completely unaware of who they were to each other. During this time, they had two sons - Polynices and Eteocles and two daughters - Antigone and Ismene.

Then an epidemic of pestilence began in Thebes. To get rid of her, the Delphic oracle, to which the Thebans turned, demanded that the murderer of King Laius be expelled from the city. And the soothsayer Tiresias announced to Oedipus that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his father Laius and married his own mother Jocasta. At the same time, the Corinthian king Polybus, the adoptive father of Oedipus, died, and his widow Peribeia, in her letter to Oedipus, revealed the circumstances of his adoption, albeit indirectly, but confirmed the statement of Tiresias. The only witness to the murder of Laius was also found, who identified Oedipus.

All doubts are gone. Out of shame and sadness, Jocasta hanged herself, and Oedipus blinded himself with a gold fastener taken from her clothes.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
