Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

In which country did they try to prevent the development of color television due to fears of social stratification?

When color televisions appeared in Israel in the 1970s, the government saw them as an unjustified, socially stratifying luxury and instructed television stations to continue broadcasting in black and white and remove the color content from imported programs and films. To do this, the so-called sync pulse was suppressed at television stations, due to which a special module in television receivers interpreted color as noise and removed it. However, engineers immediately came up with an "anti-suppressor" device, which was sold in stores for 10% of the price of a new TV. The inconvenience was that about once every 15 minutes the color disappeared, and the audience had to turn a special knob to restore it. A few years later, officials found that the vast majority of viewers had bought anti-suppressants and lifted the ban.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

food from thin air 16.12.2018

Scientists from Finland have learned how to create food from the air and in 2021 they plan to begin construction of a plant for the production of "air food". The project is being carried out by a team from LTU-University in Finland. They have already conducted experiments that have been successful.

Scientists noted that they only came up with technology, the very idea was born back in the 1960s, at the dawn of the space age. Then Soviet and American scientists wanted to provide food for people in orbit or making long space flights. At that time, this option was not very effective and extremely expensive.

All the elements necessary to create food, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, are in the air, Finnish experts say. The task actually comes down to correctly grouping the atoms. All it takes is electricity to break the water molecules into their constituent parts, and a few bacteria that begin to multiply, feeding on the products of this reaction.

In the future, the proposed technology can help solve the problem of hunger in developing countries, because it does not depend on climate or soil type and allows food to be produced in any conditions - even in the desert or in the Far North.
