At what age did Heinrich Schliemann take up archeology?

The German Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) became an archaeologist at the age of 41. Prior to that, he was engaged in commercial activities, which made him rich and allowed him to devote his life to his dream - the search for the legendary Troy, described by Homer in the Iliad and Odyssey.

Schliemann piously, with unconcealed enthusiasm, believed in the veracity of the classical authors of Greece. In 1869, he suggested that the place of Troy is the Hissarlik hill in the Dardanelles region (in Turkey). The excavations carried out by Schliemann in 1870-1873, 1878-1879, 1882-1883 and 1889-1890 fully confirmed this hypothesis. Based on the findings, Schliemann proved that the Homeric epic has a solid factual basis.

Not being a professional archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann attracted the world's interest in the possibilities of archeology, and also set standards for careful observation, thorough reporting, and prompt publication (these standards are not always followed even today).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Raven is not inferior to primacy in mental abilities 30.12.2020

Biologists from the Institute for Cognitive Sciences at the University of Osnabrück have found that the mental abilities of ravens are not inferior to great apes. Birds can communicate with each other and are able to learn.

German scientists led by Simone Pick compared the intelligence level of ravens with great apes using a series of tests for primates. Eight crows raised at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology were selected for the study. Their ages were four, eight, 12 and 16 months.

During the study, the biologists analyzed spatial memory, understanding of object permanence, understanding of relative quantities, numbers, and addition, as well as the birds' ability to communicate with other crows and learn from the human experimenter. The results obtained were compared with those obtained in two species of great apes ? 106 chimpanzees and 32 orangutans.

The researchers concluded that the intelligence of birds is formed by the age of four months. The researchers also found that, with the exception of spatial memory, the cognitive abilities of four-month-old ravens are very similar to those of adult great apes.

The test results confirm the general assessment of the high intelligence of ravens.
