Where and when was aviation born?

The official birthday of aviation is December 17, 1903, when American inventors, the Wright brothers, made four flights in the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk in North Carolina (USA) in the Flyer 1 biplane of their own design.

During the first flight, the plane, piloted by Orville Wright, stayed in the air for 12 seconds and, having covered a distance of 36,5 meters, fell to the ground. During the longest flight, a biplane piloted by Wilber Wright flew 260 meters in 59 seconds and landed softly.

However, not everyone agrees with the priority of the brothers Orville and Wilber Wright. The French believe that the palm should be awarded to Clement Ader, whose aircraft in 1890 took off the ground by 20 centimeters. New Zealanders proudly remember Richard Piars, who in March 1903 flew 135 meters in a monoplane made of bamboo and canvas and crashed into a fence.

Until 1942, the priority of the Wright brothers was not recognized even in their own country. In protest, Orville Wright handed over his aircraft to the British Museum in 1928, and only in 1948 this relic returned to its homeland.

In the old days, warriors painted dragons on their shields to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. It should be noted that sometimes people really believed that dragons existed. Before Columbus, sailors rarely dared to plow the waters of unfamiliar seas precisely because of the fear of huge monsters that supposedly live in the depths of the sea, capable of swallowing the ship whole along with the crew.

Of course, they were wrong, and dragons existed and exist only in legends and fairy tales. Then why did people consider them real beings? One possible explanation is that once, in prehistoric times, there were huge animals on Earth. The most terrible of them, dinosaurs, disappeared from the planet long before the appearance of man on it. However, it is likely that in the time of the cavemen, various gigantic reptiles continued to be found on Earth, and it was they who became the prototypes of fabulous dragons.

The ability to recreate the process of photosynthesis in the laboratory is a very tasty morsel for scientists and researchers in the context of modern biological science - if only because it could solve a number of problems associated with the ability to grow something outside of our planet. And the thing is that they managed to significantly increase the efficiency of natural photosynthesis using a mechanism that had been dormant in plants for a long time.

We are talking about increasing the efficiency of natural photosynthesis of plants through the use of a special photoelectrochemical cell of artificial origin, which is attached to the plant photosystem, which consumes the red and blue spectrum of light. Moreover, this attachment is carried out with the help of a special enzyme called hydrogenase, first found in algae, which have the ability to photosynthesis.

This combination makes it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of the latent evolutionary mechanism of natural photosynthesis in plants, while avoiding the use of any kind of catalyst of electrical origin. For example, early work in one way or another concerned the possibility and necessity of using electricity to enhance photosynthetic properties - however, this approach has a number of very noticeable limitations and does not solve the problem of growing plants outside their natural habitat - that is, outside our home planet.

The results of specialists are very promising in view of the fact that in this way a significant loss of time and the need to use third-party catalysts can be avoided. Many are sure that the technology and method presented by these specialists will become a part of practice in a certain future and may become one of the conditions for the possibility of flying to other planets and colonizing them. After all, the ability to seamlessly grow plants is worth a lot!
