Why is ice transparent and snow white?

Pure ice is transparent, while pure snow, consisting of microscopic ice crystals, is opaque and appears white to us. What is the reason for such different optical properties of the same substance?

The fact is that the sun's rays pass through the ice plate, and in the layer of snow they experience multiple reflections and come back out. At the same time, they do not lose any of the components of the spectrum (due to the very small size of the ice crystals that make up the snow), and therefore do not acquire color - and the snow appears white.
