Why is alternating current rather than direct current used for the transmission and distribution of electrical energy?

At the dawn of the electric power industry, when low-power electric current generators were located at short distances from consumers (often within the same settlement), direct electric current was successfully used to transmit electric energy. A supporter of the use of direct electric current for this purpose was, for example, Thomas Alva Edison.

Over time, the need for electricity increased, it began to be generated at large power plants with powerful units (with an increase in power, the relative costs for the construction of power plants decrease and the cost of generated electricity decreases). In this regard, there was also a need to transmit electricity over long distances.

However, the loss of electricity during its transmission is the lower, the higher the voltage of the electric current. This led to the expediency of using alternating current in power lines, the voltage of which (unlike direct current) can be easily transformed with almost no power loss.

AMD Threadripper Processors 23.10.2023

AMD has introduced updated models of high-performance Threadripper processors, introducing two new CPU classes and two chipsets. The Threadripper Pro series is aimed at demanding professionals looking for maximum performance, while the Threadripper HEDT series is aimed at prosumers on a budget willing to sacrifice some management features, 8-channel memory, and PCIe Gen 5 lanes.

Both types of processors are based on AMD Zen 4 architecture and support high-speed PCIe Gen 5 drives.

Among the new products, the flagship 96-core Threadripper Pro 7995WX processor with an improved frequency of up to 5,3 GHz, 384 MB of L3 cache and 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes stands out. There are 6 models in the Threadripper Pro line, including the base 7945WX with 12 cores and 24 instruction threads.

To create workstations based on these new processors, motherboards with TRX50 (for Threadripper HEDT) and WRX90 (for Threadripper Pro) chipsets are available. While the TRX50 chipset is compatible with Threadripper Pro processors, it won't unlock their full potential due to the lack of support for 8-channel memory and 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes.

To work with new chips, you will need to use registered memory.
