What are remarkable for the history of physics two years: 1666 and 1905?

In 1666, when Isaac Newton was studying at Cambridge University, a plague epidemic forced him to retire to the village of Woolsthorpe, where he was born. For a whole year he occupied his leisure time by developing differential and integral calculus, searching for the fundamental principles of the nature of light and laying the foundation for the theory of universal gravitation.

There was only one such year in the history of physics - 1905. This year, Albert Einstein published five papers in the German journal Annals of Physics, three of which have forever entered the history of physics as one of the greatest.

In one of them, Einstein (based on quantum concepts introduced in 1900 by Max Planck) gave the theory of the photoelectric effect - the phenomenon of electrons being pulled out of matter by light (it was for this work that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921).

The second article was devoted to explaining the behavior of the smallest particles in a liquid, known as Brownian motion.

In the third article, the main provisions of the special theory of relativity were given.

How can dolphins play with whales?

Dolphins and whales are able to play with each other. Scientists have repeatedly observed one of these interactions between bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales: upon finding a whale, the dolphin swam up and took a position above it, drawn by the wave created. After a while, the whale rose up to take a breath, at the same time lifting the dolphin on its nose. At the same time, the whale straightened up into an uncharacteristically vertical position, after which the dolphin slid down its body back into the water as if from a hill.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A new solution for charging and backing up smartphone data 18.01.2017

Toshiba has announced the launch of the innovative portable hard drive Canvio for Smartphone. When connected to an Android phone, the novelty is able to back up data and charge the connected device.

As explained by the company, in order to use the functions of charging and automatically backing up data when connecting a smartphone based on Android OS, the battery must be at a sufficient level.
