Why is Dolly the Sheep called that?

The first cloned animal, Dolly the sheep, was replicated from a cell taken from a mammary gland. When it came time to choose a name for the sheep, research team leader Ian Wilmuth tried to think of an association with the mammary glands and came up with nothing more exciting than the breasts of famous American country singer Dolly Parton.

Who is the monument dedicated to, which is 50 vertical metal poles?

Sculptor Marco Cianfanelli created an unusual monument in honor of Nelson Mandela. It consists of 50 vertical metal poles, in which special thickenings are made so that Mandela's face can be seen in them from a distance. These poles, according to the sculptor, symbolize the bars of the prison in which Mandela spent 27 years. The monument itself is located near the South African city of Durban - approximately in the place where Mandela was arrested in 1962.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Sony IMX324 Ultra-Sensitive Automotive Image Sensor 28.10.2017

Sony has introduced a new 7,72-megapixel IMX324 sensor. The sensor has 7,42 million effective pixels, the highest in the industry. Sensor aspect ratio 1/1,7. Sensitivity is determined at the level of 2666 mV. The resolution of the sensor is such that the camera using it is able to obtain a clear image of a road sign from a distance of about 160 meters. A man can't do that.

Such sensors are designed to work in ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) electronic driver assistance systems. This development, according to Sony, is compatible with the EyeQ4 and EyeQ5 image processors from Mobileye, previously acquired by Intel.

At night, the IMX324 sensors work both in "burst" mode with RCCC filters (red, three clean), when four adjacent pixels work as one (pixel binning mode) to increase sensitivity, and in alternating light / shadow mode. The pixel array for each frame alternately switches from high sensitivity mode for capturing images in dark areas of the scene, to capturing highlights in bright street lighting and in the light of car headlights. The final image, which is "glued together" by a specialized processor, is detailed and relatively contrasting in the shadows and in the light.

Sony IMX324 sensors are capable of capturing images with ambient light as low as 0,1 lux. It's like shooting under the light of a full moon on a cloudless day. Sensors will help to distinguish a pedestrian on the track and possible obstacles at a great distance. Sensors, which is typical for Sony, are multi-layered and designed for stacking, which allows you to make cameras with them compact.
