NAND flash is getting cheaper

11.09.2013

Significant progress has been made in the flash memory market. Contract ex-works prices for NAND-flash, which have been at a constant level over the past year, showed a steady downward trend in the second half of August. The cost of chips fell immediately by 5-10 percent, but analysts predict that this could be a signal for more significant changes. The main reason for the fall in prices was a clear decline in demand, and there are no prospects for its recovery yet.

As indicated in a recent analytical report by TrendForce, contract prices for NAND-memory decreased under the influence of cooling interest in such chips from manufacturers of laptops, tablets and communicators. They have amassed a solid stock of chips lately, but there are no signs of a possible increase in flash memory consumption. On the contrary, sales of laptops with SSDs are falling, and new models of tablets and smartphones coming out this fall, for the most part, are not going to offer increased memory capacities.

The production of flash memory will not be delayed at the existing indicators - by the end of the year, the supply of NAND chips will increase by at least 10 percent. While the major players have tried to keep their products from depreciating by concerted efforts to artificially curb NAND chip output, these measures have not yielded the expected result, and during the rest of this year, the stopped production lines will be restarted, spurring further price declines.

First of all, buyers of solid-state drives, the cost of which depends on the prices of NAND chips, will be able to feel the coming changes.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Color vision weakens towards the periphery 21.06.2020

It is often said: "out of the corner of my eye I noticed (noticed)", that is, I saw with peripheral vision. However, you should not trust the edge of your eye so much: with peripheral vision, we usually see the same thing as in front of us. (Although this does not mean that out of the corner of the eye it is generally impossible to notice anything.)

Another oddity of peripheral vision was found out by the staff of Dartmouth College and Amherst College. The strangeness concerns the perception of color. The researchers set up an experiment with volunteers who were immersed in virtual reality: they walked around some historical places, watched street performances, listened to an orchestra rehearsal, etc. In virtual reality, you could turn around and look at it as you like.

A sensor was built into the device that tracks the direction of gaze, and the researchers changed the color saturation of the picture so that only the area in the center of the gaze was fully colored. At the periphery, the colors faded and disappeared, so that the side picture sometimes became black and white. The subjects were then asked about what colors they saw and where they saw them - and it turned out that most (but not all) did not pay attention to the discoloration of the peripheral image. A third of the volunteers generally saw colors only in the most central zone, which accounted for only 5% of the entire field of view. In another version of the experiment, it was necessary to determine which color loses saturation at the periphery, and the results were similar - most did not notice the color weakening.

About 180 people participated in the study, and it is unlikely that all of them had the same feature that did not allow them to adequately perceive colors with peripheral vision. So, most likely, this is a common feature of human vision. What physiological mechanisms work here remains to be seen, although it can be assumed that insensitivity to "lateral colors" is due to the fact that the cone photoreceptors, which just distinguish colors, are grouped mainly in the center of the retina.
