What causes stomach ulcers?

According to the most common theory, an ulcer occurs due to the digestive action of gastric juice on the mucous membrane (peptic ulcer). It is caused either by an increase in the activity of the juice, or by a decrease in the resistance of sections of the mucous membrane to its action.

For a long time, gastritis was considered the primary factor in this process. In the 1950s and 1960s, the central importance was recognized for the nervous system, in the 1970s and 1980s for gastrin (a hormone that is produced in the pancreas), and now the root cause of stomach ulcers is seen in the colonization of the stomach by pyloric Helicobacter pylori. It's not even the bacterium itself, but its toxins, which cause both an increase in gastrin secretion and an increase in the production of hydrochloric acid.

Pyloric Helicobacter pylori is found in the stomach and in many healthy people. It produces an antibiotic that protects against salmonella and other dangerous microorganisms. Apparently, in principle, it is useful for the body, but sometimes it "goes crazy" and causes ulceration of the stomach wall - perhaps in people with reduced immunity.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is the difference between mumpsimus and sumpsimus?

The English word "mumpsimus" denotes a person who sticks to his views or habits even after they have been clearly shown to be wrong. The origin of the term goes back to the story of a priest who misremembered the Latin word "sumpsimus" as "mumpsimus". When the error was pointed out to him, he said that he was already used to writing like that and would not be reorganized. Interestingly, "sumpsimus" also appears in the English dictionary and means the opposite - a strict pedant who refuses to accept more common but formally incorrect norms.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The unscientific diet of centenarians 06.01.2017

American scientists told what kind of food centenarians prefer. It turned out that their dietary habits do not coincide with the advice of nutritionists.

Experts have found that residents of the so-called "blue zones" or places on the planet with the highest life expectancy do not always follow the advice of doctors. Many of them eat meat, eggs, drink coffee and even whiskey.

For example, Emma Morano, who is already 117 years old, has been eating raw eggs every morning since the age of twenty, and the diet of the Japanese Miso Okawa, born in 1898, regularly contains ramen noodles, beef and sushi. American Susanna Mushatt Jones, who lived to be 116 years old and died in 2016, regularly ate bacon and eggs during her lifetime.
