What is endocrinology?

Our body has organs that produce chemicals whose purpose is to keep the body, as they say, in working condition. These chemicals are called hormones. And the organs that produce hormones make up the so-called endocrine system. The science that studies these organs and the hormones themselves is called endocrinology. The organs of the endocrine system are called endocrine glands, because they send the substances they produce directly to the blood circulating inside the body, which carries them to different parts of it.

The endocrine glands have the following names: thyroid, several parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, ovary (or testis), pancreas, and thymus (goiter) gland. Some of them produce different types of hormones, others - only one. The endocrine system regulates many functions of the human body.

So, for example, his height and size, appearance, distribution of hairline, total weight, the so-called secondary sexual characteristics of men and women - all this is regulated by hormones. They also regulate the amount of urine produced by the body, body temperature, the rate at which metabolism (metabolism) is carried out, the sugar and calcium levels in the blood, and the conversion of proteins into a kind of energy carriers.

But how they are able to do all this is still not entirely clear to specialists. Hormones are responsible for the activity of the reproductive organs. They are an important factor in the development of a person's personality. Mental and physical activity, femininity and masculinity - all this is greatly influenced by hormones.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Genetics and cholesterol 14.05.2016

An excess of a harmful substance in the blood may not be related to nutrition.

Everyone now knows that low-density cholesterol is harmful: this substance necessary for the body suddenly forms plaques in the blood vessels. Developing over several years, they clog blood vessels, which leads to heart disease and other troubles. It is believed that at risk are overweight people who eat fatty foods and consume a lot of refined sugar. However, sometimes a skinny person who has preferred a Mediterranean diet with an abundance of vegetables, herbs and seafood all his life, doctors say: but you will have too much cholesterol, you should be careful. Why is it so?

It turns out that this is a genetically determined feature of the body. Researchers at the Boston Children's Hospital, led by Dr. Sarah de Ferranti, analyzed data from 36 people who took part in a US nutrition and health analysis program from 1999 to 2012. They looked at blood tests, weight, race, gender, history of heart attacks, and family history of program participants. As it turns out, the family predisposition to high cholesterol is by no means an urban legend, it is present in one person in 250 Americans. More precisely, one in 249 whites, one in 211 blacks, and one in 414 Hispanics. The data on whites upset the researchers: they thought that the predisposition was half as common.

“With a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol, the risk of a heart attack is as if a person is ten years older than his age. If there are cases of early heart attacks in the family, then such people should avoid additional risk factors such as smoking, being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle,” says de Ferranti, "It's a pity we don't have genetic data, and we would like to get it in the course of further work."
