Bison

Markov N.E.
Markov N.E.

Phraseologism: Bison

Meaning: Authoritative person.

Origin: From the inter-party controversy in Russia at the beginning of the 3th century. So political opponents ironically called ("Kursk bisons") the conservative-minded noble deputies of the 1916rd State Duma, whom the tsarist government carefully took care of, considering them their political support in the Duma. The left thus made it clear that the government treats the right as a rare species of animals - as endangered bison of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha reserve. The reason for this nickname was the speech at one of the Duma meetings (February 2) of the Black Hundred deputy, the Kursk landowner Nikolai Evgenievich Markov 1866nd (1945-3). (Numbers were given to deputies with the same name - according to their seniority). In his speech, he complained about the newspapers, which, in his words, "represent the excellent work of the Kursk Zemstvo in the form of some kind of ridiculous exercise of bison" (States, Duma, IV convocation, XNUMXrd session, stenographer, reports). Thus, the word "bison", used in a figurative sense, in Russia at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. meant something obsolete, reactionary, anachronistic, etc., that is, it served as an analogue of such modern figurative expressions as "fossil" or "dinosaur". In modern speech, largely due to the famous novel "Zubr" by the writer Daniil Granin, this expression changed its sign to the opposite and began to take on the character of a positive assessment, meaning an authoritative, famous person who has reached the heights in his professional activity.

Random phraseology:

Ignorant person.

Meaning:

Frivolous, careless, dissolute.

Origin:

In the old days in Russia, not only the road was called the way, but also various positions at the prince's court. The falconer's path is in charge of princely hunting, the trapping path is dog hunting, the equerry's path is carriages and horses. The boyars, by hook or by crook, tried to get a way from the prince - a position. And to those who did not succeed, they spoke of those with disdain: an unlucky person.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Sony CXD5600GF and CXD5601GG GNSS receivers 25.02.2013

The Japanese company Sony announced the release of chips CXD5600GF and CXD5601GG, realizing the functions of receiving signals from satellite navigation systems (Global Navigation Satellite System, GNSS). According to the manufacturer, they are characterized by the smallest power consumption in the industry - only 10 mW. At the same time, the CXD5430 GNSS module for mobile devices is introduced. Deliveries of new products will begin in June this year.

The popularity of applications that use GNSS information is constantly growing. These include navigation, marking photographs with data on the shooting location, saving routes traveled. GNSS reception is increasingly available on mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets and cameras. However, the high power consumption of receivers stands in the way of the widespread use of global positioning services, with the active use of which the autonomy of mobile devices decreases.

By applying numerous measures to reduce power consumption, including the development of new circuits based on know-how in the field of receive circuit design, as well as experience in creating advanced power management circuits for individual chips, Sony specialists were able to overcome this limitation.

An important feature of the new chips is a new architecture for the interaction of individual blocks. The receiver receives not only GNSS data, but also data from numerous sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetic field sensors. This helps to refine and complete position information in conditions where satellite signals are weak or absent.

Chips work with five navigation systems: Global Positioning System (GPS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) and Indoor Messaging System (IMES).
