What is the difference between woodwind instruments and brass instruments?

Wind musical instruments are divided into wood and brass, but this classification is only historically associated with the materials used to make the instruments. Today, this division implies only a way to extract sound: in woodwind instruments, the sounding column is regulated by blocking the holes on the body, and in brass instruments, by changing the force of air blowing or the position of the lips. Thus, woodwinds include both the flute, which almost no one now makes from wood, and the saxophone, which throughout its history was only metal. And the group of brass wind instruments, in addition to the usual trumpet and trombone, includes, for example, a serpent, which was made of wood several centuries ago.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Light bulb saves lives 23.12.2017

HTC is working on a smart home device that could save a life.

Using the technologies that were applied in the development of the aforementioned HTC Vive headset, the company created a light bulb. It connects to a conventional base, but lighting is not the main task of the device.

The light bulb is endowed with a function that allows you to fix if a person has fallen in a specific room, for example, in a bathroom, where it is often slippery. Sensors record if a person remains motionless or is unable to get up to dial an emergency number and call for help.

If you stay too long in one place, the light bulb can send you a message through the appropriate application, which will offer you to get up and stretch.
