What rock band's music attracts sharks?

Australian Matt Waller organizes underwater tours for fans to watch sharks. Traditionally, he has used fish to lure predators, but he recently discovered by chance that sharks are attracted to the music of rock band AC/DC. Presumably, sharks respond to low frequency vibration because they don't have ears. How is gold found?

Probably the first metal known to man was gold. By the way it occurs in nature, man learned about it and appreciated it long before historical times. How is gold found?

Although gold is considered valuable and rare, it is abundant in nature. The trouble is that in most cases a gold deposit is unprofitable to develop because there is not enough metal in it. For example, sea water contains a small amount of gold. But there is so little of it that no one knows how to extract gold from water. But there is so much water in the oceans that the total amount of gold in them could be ten billion tons.

Gold occurs in two forms: native, which means that it does not contain impurities of other minerals, and combined with ores of other metals. Native gold is most often found in quartz veins or in iron pyrite beds. Sometimes quartz or pyrites are exposed to water and wind. Particles of stones surrounding the grains of gold are washed away, revealing grains and nuggets of pure gold. Nuggets are gradually washed to the bottom of the valleys and mixed with sand and gravel. Such gold is called "alluvial" or "loose".

When man first discovered gold, it was loose. Gold particles range in size from tiny specks of dust to large nuggets, such as the "Welcome Stranger" nugget found in Australia, which weighs about 70 kg. Gold is often found in ores of other metals. Silver almost always contains particles of gold. Copper ores are also often found in combination with gold.

Today, gold is mined in the same ways as other metals. A deep pit, called a mine, breaks deep into the earth to the deposits of gold. It can be more than a kilometer deep! The ore is then exploded, loaded onto carts, transported to the shaft and lifted to the surface. It is crushed to fine sand, called pulp, and then the gold is separated from other substances by chemical action. The three main gold mining countries in the world are South Africa, Russia and the United States.

Superconducting DNA wires 28.01.2021

Physicists have figured out how to use DNA origami technology to produce superconducting nanowires of arbitrary shape and length. Due to this, it is possible that they can be used for the production of nanoelectronics.

In recent years, scientists have identified many organic compounds that could replace silicon and other semiconductors in computer chips. Many of these compounds are already used in the development of LED and liquid crystal displays, sensors and various medical and scientific devices.

At the same time, it turned out to be much more difficult to synthesize organic molecules that could conduct current and, due to this, replace metals. For example, scientists found one such substance only three years ago. It is an integrin protein that coats the surface of human cells. It turned out that its fragments can conduct current almost without loss.

Researchers from Israel and the US have found that DNA molecules with metal nanoparticles attached to them can be used as scaffolds for complex composite superconductors. They wanted to combine a similar technology with DNA origami. This is the name of the method by which single strands of DNA can be used to assemble complex three-dimensional structures that can move, interact with environmental objects and solve various practical problems.

Scientists have suggested that based on DNA origami, it is possible to create a technology thanks to which it will be possible to assemble nanowires of arbitrary shape, length and size. To do this, Bar-Ilan University physicist Lior Shani and his colleagues assembled several nanowires about 200 nm long and 25 nm thick. The scientists attached this structure to the surface of a special nanostructure, which consisted of a silicon substrate and two superconducting electrodes, and then studied the physical properties of the nanowire.

The discovery can be applied to the use of superconductors in nanoelectronics and to the development of new scientific and industrial devices, including ultrasensitive magnetic field sensors, quantum signal amplifiers and various sensors.
