Even before historical materialism

Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov
Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov

Phraseologism: Even before historical materialism.

Meaning: In the days of tsarist Russia, before the Soviet period of its history (jokingly-iron.).

Origin: From the novel "The Twelve Chairs" (1927) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942). The words of Ostap Bender, who specifies the age of the old women living in a nursing home: "Are those who were born before historical materialism?" (that is, before the advent of Marxist theory).

Random phraseology:

Business idleness. Business bum.

Meaning:

A joke paradox.

Origin:

This paradox is found in various formulations by ancient authors. For example, Aristophanes (c. 446-385 BC - "lazy activity" ("Frogs"), Horace (65-8 BC) - "active inaction" (Letters 1, 11, Phaedra (I century AD) - "leisure activities", in Seneca (4-65 AD) "restless inactivity" ("On the peace of the soul", 12), "an idle occupation" (" On the brevity of life ", 11), "inactive business" (ibid., 12). This antithesis, following ancient literature, was assimilated by the world literature of modern times. The founder of the new Danish literature, Ludwig Golberg (1684-1754), belongs to the comedy "Business Loafer" , in imitation of which in Germany in 1743 a comedy by Johann Elias Schlegel (1718-1749) appeared under the same name.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Named the reason for the rapid growth of black holes 06.04.2012

When scientists figured out that there is a supermassive black hole at the center of almost every large galaxy, they immediately faced a mystery that they could not solve for a long time. Scientists have learned that the supermassive black holes of the first galaxies in the Universe gained mass almost immediately, that is, being ten times younger than today, they have already "fat" to billions, and sometimes even trillions of solar masses. This was inconsistent with observations.

As now, so in those days, the main "dish" of black holes was a "cocktail" of interstellar gas and dust, and stars, planets and large asteroids were nothing more than a rare delicacy for them. Gas and dust clouds, attracted by the gravity of the black hole, do not immediately find themselves inside: at first they begin to rotate around, forming a flaming disk, and only then gradually get inside. This process cannot provide the rate of mass gain that the first superholes had.

British astrophysicists at the University of Leicester claim to have solved this puzzle.
"We needed a faster mass-gain mechanism," says Chris Nixon, one of the members of the Leicester team, "so we decided to see what would happen if the gas jets hit the black hole from different directions."

Computer simulations have shown that if two jets approach the black hole at the same time, they form two different disks located at an angle to each other. Independently of each other, these two disks will exist only for a short time, and then collide, after which a lot of matter will immediately fall into the black hole.

Scientists compare this process to the imagined tragedy in the circus on the Wall of Death, which, as we often see, is driven in circles by crazy motorcyclists. If the motorcyclists collide, they will both fall. In the same way, two huge flat disks around a black hole collide, lose their rotational energy and fall. Thanks to this effect, the mass gain rate of a black hole can increase up to a thousand times.
