Brain drain, brain drain

English
English

Phraseologism: Brain drain, brain drain.

Meaning: Emigration from the country of valuable specialists, gifted, promising scientists.

Origin: From English: "Brain drain". The expression was born in Europe after World War II, when many scientific and technical workers, especially the British, began to move permanently to the United States, practically untouched by the war, where working conditions, pay and quality of life in general were incomparably better. The same phenomenon has become characteristic of modern Russia.

Random phraseology:

A wonderful new world.

Meaning:

The expression is usually used ironically - in relation to an attempt to translate into reality a certain social utopia with features of totalitarianism: about a certain social model that is imposed on everyone as the only possible way of life. Equally common in the same sense is another translation of the phrase - "brave new world".

Origin:

The primary source is the romantic drama The Tempest (161.2) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Miranda's response (act 5, scene 1): O brave new world!.. "How beautiful is this new world. // In which there are such people!" The expression became catchphrase after the English writer Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) made it the title of his dystopian novel ("Brave New World", 1932), which is a satire on both totalitarianism and the standardized way of life "society consumption".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Grazing robot 30.11.2015

Water bugs are little known to the masses. They are mainly herbivorous and live in ponds or slow-moving rivers, where they swim with paddle-like hind legs covered with hairs. This feature gave rowers in the United States the name "river boatmen" (water boatmen).

However, for scientists at the University of Bristol (Great Britain), rowers served as a source of inspiration for the creation of a new type of device for water purification from microorganisms. A prototype robot called Row-bot (a play on words from the English row - “row”) moves along the surface of polluted ponds and lakes, collects microbes, “eats” them and “digests” them in an artificial stomach, thereby generating energy to ensure its life.

The Row-bot consists of two main components: a paddle-shaped propulsor driven by a miniature 0,75 W DC brushed motor, and a "stomach" containing microbial fuel cells that generate electricity. When it enters a body of water, the robot absorbs a certain amount of liquid with microbes, and the elements generate electricity sufficient for several strokes. The robot starts moving, "drinks" more water, and the process repeats. In this, Row-bot differs from similar miniature floating robots, as it is completely powered by the environment in which it floats. For example, the "Robo-bee" (Robobee), invented by the staff of Harvard University, which we recently wrote about, provides itself with power through piezoelectric actuators.

As for the rower, the developers borrowed legs from it, covered with hairs to increase the surface area during the traction phase of the stroke. The legs then fold in to reduce water resistance. Each paddle paddle is 3D printed from composite materials and is a rigid frame supporting an elastic membrane. A loop is built into the membrane, which changes the angle of attack of the part of the oar that is under water, and thereby further reduces the resistance of the water.
