Vysotsky V.S.

Phraseologism: If a friend turned up suddenly.

Meaning: It is used to express regret over a suddenly revealed betrayal, an unseemly act on the part of a good friend, friend, etc. (ironic).

Origin: From the "Song of a Friend" by the actor, poet and performer of his own songs Vladimir Semenovich Vysotsky (1938-1980), which he wrote for the film "Vertical" (1967, directors S. Govorukhin and B. Durov): "If a friend turned out to be suddenly / / And not a friend, and not an enemy, and so ... "

Random phraseology:

Whore of Babylon.

Meaning:

A harlot, a woman of easy virtue.

Origin:

The expression arose from the Apocalypse (17, 1 and 5): "I will show you the judgment of the great harlot ... on her forehead is written the name: mystery. Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of men."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Graphene will be used in a quantum computer 04.01.2014

The amazing material graphene is now the object of study in many laboratories around the world. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have uncovered additional potential for using a single layer of carbon material, discovering unexpected properties it exhibits under certain conditions. According to experts, these properties can be used in quantum computing.

As it turned out, under the influence of a very strong magnetic field and a very low temperature, graphene filters electrons along the spin - the electronic devices we are used to are deprived of this quality.

If you apply voltage to a piece of graphene under normal conditions, a current will flow through it. However, as soon as a magnetic field is applied, the lines of force of which are perpendicular to the plane of graphene, its behavior changes: the current flows only along the edge of the piece, and the central part becomes a dielectric. Moreover, the current flows in only one direction, depending on the direction of the magnetic field lines. This effect is known as the quantum Hall effect.

The researchers took the next step by applying a second magnetic field parallel to the graphene sheet, and this again changed its behavior. Electrons were able to move in both directions, with positive spin electrons moving in one direction and negative spin electrons moving in the opposite direction.

Spin segregation of electrons is characteristic of topological insulators, but it is not observed in conventional conductors. According to the scientists, they managed to create a special kind of conductor by making one material behave like another. Moreover, by changing the magnetic field, it is possible to control the detected edge effect. As stated, this principle can be used to build transistors and more complex circuits that have not yet been possible to implement using existing materials.

In particular, scientists see the potential of graphene in relation to the creation of a quantum computer in the discovery. Of course, the effect is still far from practical application: it is observed at a magnetic field induction of 35 T, which is approximately an order of magnitude greater than in MRI, and at a temperature that is only 0,3°C above absolute zero.

However, scientists have already managed to detect a similar effect in a field with an induction of only 1 T and at higher temperatures.
