Breathe incense
Proverbs and sayings
Phraseologism: Breathe incense.
Meaning: 1. To be near death (about a person). 2. Fall into disrepair, decay (about things). 3. To be on the eve of collapse, cessation of existence.
Origin: The expression is based on the religious and ritual symbolism of the word frankincense "hardened resinous juice of special tree species, which gives a strong fragrant smell when burned." In the church, incense is censed - they swing the censer (a vessel in which incense is smoked) in front of the images of God and the saints in order to propitiate them. This rite is also performed before the dead or dying. A man who did not have long to live, the priest confessed, communed and censed with incense. It turned out that the dying person before death "breathed incense." There is another explanation: a dying person was brought smoking incense to his mouth, and by whether the smoke of the incense fluctuates or not, it was determined whether the person was alive or had already died.
Random phraseology:
Mass culture.
Meaning:
About the undemanding, primitive tastes of the majority (contempt., disapproval.).
Origin:
From English: Mass Culture. The appearance of the expression "mass culture" was first noted in the United States in 1939. But in the now generally accepted cultural sense, it was first used by the American art historian Max Horkheimer in his work "Art and Popular Culture" (1941). Later in the United States, the same meaning of the abbreviation word "masskult" appeared, which was introduced (1963) by the American philosopher, culturologist and essayist Dwight Macdonald. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Flexible Memory
24.02.2012
Korean engineers have developed a new type of non-volatile memory that can be used in computing devices.
Scientists from the Research Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications KAIST in South Korea have created a new type of non-volatile memory based on memristors. Recall that a memristor is an electronic element that changes its resistance when an electric current passes through it. And the property of memristors to maintain a resistance value after the current supply is stopped makes it an ideal means for storing information. The fabrication process and structure of such memristors make it possible to deposit them on a flexible substrate.
Unlike previous similar samples of flexible memory, the new generation memristors are made not from titanium oxide, but from a graphene oxide film. Their use as information storage cells will allow the development of new data storage devices with higher recording density, cheaper production and low power consumption. And the flexibility of the new elements will make it possible to use them in a variety of devices, from household appliances to clothing of the future.
