A friend in need is a friend indeed

Ennius Quintus
Ennius Quintus

Phraseologism: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Meaning: Friendship is tested by hard times.

Origin: From Latin: Amicus certus in re incerta. Translation: A true friend is known in a wrong deed. The primary source is the tragedy "Hecuba" by the Roman poet Ennius Quintus (239-169 BC). Later, these words will be quoted in his treatise "On Friendship" by the famous Roman orator, writer and statesman Mark Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC), which will make them widely known and popular. Perhaps the phrase is the primary source of the Russian proverb "Friends are known in trouble."

Random phraseology:

Open door policy.

Meaning:

The policy of the state, which opens its borders for the free import of foreign goods, their competition with domestic producers, as well as for the free entry of people, the exchange of information, ideas, etc.

Origin:

The expression is associated with the policy of world powers in relation to the Chinese market for the goods of these countries. In September 1899, United States Secretary of State John Hay sent a circular letter to all American diplomatic missions abroad. It set the task of "keeping the Chinese door open," that is, trying in every possible way to open the Chinese market for imported goods. This immediate interest of Washington was covered up by words about "preserving the integrity" of China, that is, its sovereignty. In March 1901, a collection of diplomatic notes exchanged between the United States and other great powers regarding the "open door policy" in China was published in Washington.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New nanomaterial converts more than 90% of light into heat 04.11.2014

Engineers at the University of California at San Diego (USA) have developed an innovative material that converts more than 90% of sunlight into heat.

Due to the unique structure of the nanoparticles that make up the material, it is able to withstand temperatures in excess of 700 °C and can be used outdoors for many years, even in high humidity.

The materials currently used in concentrating solar collectors have a short service life due to the deterioration of properties under the influence of thermal energy. Concentrating collectors use mirrors to focus light and convert it into electricity. The concentrated light heats the water, turning it into steam, which turns the turbine of a generator that generates electricity.

The newest material is based on silicon with a boron-based nanocoating. The coating is formed using particles of various sizes: from 10 nanometers to 10 micrometers, which allows the material to effectively absorb solar radiation while operating at high temperatures.
