Twenty-three years! And nothing is done for immortality

Johann Friedrich Schiller
Johann Friedrich Schiller

Phraseologism: Twenty-three years! And nothing has been done for immortality.

Meaning: Regret that nothing remarkable has been done to immortalize and glorify his name, to enter History.

Origin: From the play "Don Carlos" (act. 2, yavl. 2) by the German playwright Johann Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), words by don Carlos. But there is no evidence that the real Don Carlos (1545-1568), the son of the Spanish King Philip II, ever uttered these words. It is possible that the expression goes back to a well-known episode described by the ancient historian Plutarch ("Gaius Caesar"): "Reading at your leisure something from what was written about the deeds of Alexander (Macedonian. - Comp.), Caesar plunged into thought for a long time, and then even shed a tear. When surprised friends asked him about the reason for this, he replied: "Does it not seem to you an insufficient reason for sadness that at my age Alexander already ruled so many nations, and I still have not done anything brilliant?" The Roman historian Suetonius also conveys it in his work "The Life of the Twelve Caesars" ("The Divine Julius").

Random phraseology:

Love for fatherly coffins.

Meaning:

About patriotism, love for the motherland, which usually manifests itself in a simple, natural form - as affection for one's home, as fidelity to the memory of one's ancestors.

Origin:

From the poem "Rough Sketches" (1830, publ. 1855) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837): father's coffins."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Thin transistors for invisible electronic skin 29.06.2021

Scientists have become one step closer to creating a full-fledged electronic skin. To achieve this goal, a special nanocoating was developed that is only three atoms thick, making it virtually invisible to the human eye.

The technology was created by scientists from Stanford. In the future, it will allow the production of transistors with a length of less than 100 nanometers - several times less than the previous record. The breakthrough was achieved by replacing flexible plastic with silicon with an ultra-thin film of molybdenum disulfide coated with nano-coated gold electrodes. The output was a film only three atoms thick, created at a temperature of 815 degrees. The researchers argue that a traditional substrate would deform after reaching 360 degrees.

After the components have cooled, the film is applied to the substrate, and the finished transistor structure will be only 5 microns thick, or one-tenth the diameter of a human hair. Such e-skin is not demanding on power consumption and can withstand high currents at low voltage. It is important to consider that it meets all the requirements for such products: thin and almost invisible.

The next stage of research involves the integration of wireless technologies, which will allow you to connect to the network without additional equipment. In addition, there are plans to create a mass production technique, which in the future will allow us to talk about the emergence of highly efficient electronic skin, implants and other flexible devices.
