citizen of the universe

Socrates
Socrates

Phraseologism: Citizen of the Universe.

Meaning: About a person who has dual citizenship or who actively and a lot moves around the world (jokingly ironic).

Origin: The author of the expression (in Greek "cosmopolitan") is the great philosopher of Ancient Greece Socrates (470-399 BC), who, according to the philosopher Epictetus (50-c. 140), said: "If what they say is true philosophers about the relationship between God and people, then a person must answer the question about the homeland with the words of Socrates: I am not an Athenian or a Corinthian, but I am a cosmopolitan "(" Conversations "). Other sources attribute the authorship of this expression to the philosopher Zenon of Kition (IV-111 centuries BC), others to the thinker Diogenes of Sinop (V-IV centuries BC). But one thing is certain - the expression originated in ancient Greece and was widely used among its philosophers. This is also proved by the fact that the very word "cosmopolitan", widely used in modern speech (usually negatively), means "citizen of the universe" in ancient Greek.

Random phraseology:

There is no prophet in his own country.

Meaning:

People do not believe in talent, genius or the truth of the words of the person who is next to them. It is assumed that everything truly wise, correct, etc. can be born not here, but somewhere in a beautiful far away.

Origin:

From the Bible. The expression was formed on the basis of the following gospel verse (New Testament, Gospel of Matthew, 13:57): "... Jesus said to them: There is no prophet without honor, except in his own country and in his own house." Sometimes the expression is quoted in Old Slavonic: "There is no prophet in his own country."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Magnetic GPS in salmon noses 15.02.2014

Scientists have been watching salmon fish, trying to understand how they remember and find their way to the same river in which they once hatched. They were able to find out that Canadian sockeye salmon use magnetic navigation to find spawning grounds.

Salmon and many other types of red fish do have a special set of nerve cells inside their noses that act like magnetic GPS, allowing these fish to accurately locate the river they were born in, according to an article published in the journal Current Biology.

"What is particularly interesting in these experiments is that our fish never left the artificial spawning grounds. This suggests that this skill was not acquired by them as a result of life experience, but is "embedded" in their genome. It is quite possible that salmon are equipped with a complete a set of navigation "devices" that help them navigate by the sun, smells and other things," said Nathan Putman of the University of Oregon at Corvallis (USA).

Putman and his colleagues have been watching salmon fish for a long time, trying to understand how they remember and find their way to the same river in which they once hatched. In early 2013, they were able to find out that Canadian sockeye salmon use magnetic navigation to find spawning grounds by comparing their migration routes and the location of magnetic anomalies.

Encouraged by these results, Putman's group tried to find a "magnetic GPS" in the lab. To do this, they purchased a thousand fry of Pacific Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and placed them in a special aquarium, the walls of which were covered with a grid of wires that allowed them to create a weak magnetic field.

This grid allowed scientists to simulate the Earth's magnetic field, generated in different parts of it - off the coast of Alaska, the Far East, or in southern California. By changing the "region", the authors of the article followed where the fry moved and whether their motion vector changed with shifts in the magnetic field.

It turned out that the chinook salmon was very sensitive to changes in the strength and direction of the magnetic field and changed the direction of movement. This allows us to say with confidence that salmon are able to use the Earth's magnetic field for navigation.
