NASA estimates that at least one piece of space debris falls to Earth every day, but as far as is known, only one hit on a person has been recorded so far. In 1997, a certain Lottie Williams was walking in a park in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when she suddenly saw a trail of fire in the sky and something lightly hit her on the shoulder. It turned out to be a strip of metal, a piece from a Delta-2 rocket that weighed as much as an empty soda can.

According to the European Space Agency, in 75 years of life, each of us has less than one chance in a billion that a part of a satellite or launch vehicle will fall into it. By comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in your lifetime is about one in 80. Of all space debris circulating around the Earth, 37% belong to Russia, 29% to America and 28% to China.
