Hannibal at the gate

Mark Tullius Cicero
Mark Tullius Cicero

Phraseologism: Hannibal at the gate.

Meaning: About the imminent and formidable danger (outdated book).

Origin: Expression - half-calca from lat. "Hannibal ad portas". The expression belongs to the ancient Roman orator Cicero. He used it in one of his speeches against Mark Antony, who was marching on Rome to seize power. With this expression, Cicero reminded the Roman Senate of the great Carthaginian commander, whose name terrified the Roman citizens. Since then, it has served as a reminder of mortal danger.

Random phraseology:

The abomination of desolation.

Meaning:

Devastation and abandonment, devastation, dirt in a place once glorious and revered, but now desecrated and devastated.

Origin:

From the Bible. From the Old Testament (Book of the prophet Daniel, 9:27): "... And on the wing of the sanctuary there will be an abomination of desolation, and the final predestined death will overtake the desolator." The same expression is repeated in the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew (24:15-16): "Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of through the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place - whoever reads, let him understand, - then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Summit's fastest supercomputer in the world 13.06.2018

Since 2013, the fastest computer in the world has belonged to China, in 2016 the palm passed to Switzerland, and now the United States has taken over.

Summit is located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is capable of about 200 quadrillion calculations per second, which is a million times faster than your average home computer and twice as fast as the previous record holder in this area. It employs about 37000 processors and occupies the area of two tennis courts.

But the most interesting thing about Summit is the purpose of its creation. The computer is specifically aimed at the functioning of artificial intelligence, it has 28000 GPUs optimized for machine learning algorithms.

With the capabilities that Summit offers, researchers can apply machine learning to problems in astronomy, chemistry, and biology. For example, Summit can analyze images from telescopes to search for objects on demand, or analyze complex DNA to recognize the structure of proteins.

Moreover, the goal of the United States, China and several EU countries is to create a computer capable of performing one quintillion calculations per second, that is, it should be five times more powerful than Summit. In the United States, such hopes are placed on the Aurora computer, which is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
