Admiral's hour

Peter the Great
Peter the Great

Phraseologism: Admiral hour.

Meaning: Allegorically: the time (around noon, noon) when it's time to "drink and eat" (joking). Usually this expression is accompanied by a comment: "Gentlemen drink and eat" (jokingly).

Origin: As the researcher of the Russian language and ethnographer I. M. Snegirev writes in his work "Russians in their proverbs", this expression resembles "the custom of the founder of the Russian fleet (Peter the Great. - Comp.) at eleven o'clock in the morning after work, drink vodka with his employees." It was a kind of "lunch break" for Peter. The expression "admiral's hour" came into wide use after, beginning in 1865 at exactly noon in St. Petersburg, they began to shoot from the cannon of the Admiralty, thereby indicating the exact time.

Random phraseology:

The guard is tired.

Meaning:

Proposal to end the protracted meeting.

Origin:

The words of the head of the security of the Tauride Palace, sailor Anatoly Grigorievich Zheleznyakov (1895-1919), addressed to the chairman of the Constituent Assembly V. M. Chernov on the night of January 5-6, 1918, when it was dissolved by the Bolsheviks (by decision of V. I. Lenin and commissioner P. E. Dybenko).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Lemon and sun for water disinfection 01.05.2012

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University believe that sunlight and lemon juice make water drinkable.

Scientists have found that adding lemon juice to water and then exposing the bottle to sunlight significantly reduces the amount of harmful bacteria such as E. coli.

Access to clean drinking water continues to be a major problem in many countries. Worldwide, half of all hospital beds are occupied by patients who become ill as a result of drinking poor-quality water.

But it turns out that the problem can be partially solved with the help of sunlight and adding lemon juice to the water. The recipe is as follows: 2 ml of lemon or lime juice is added to 30 liters of water. This is quite a bit and does not spoil the taste of water. Then a bottle of water is exposed to the Sun: from 6 hours on a bright fine day to 48 hours on an overcast one.

Experiments using cultures of E. coli bacteria, bacteriophage MS2 and noroviruses showed that in the process of disinfection with lemon juice and sunlight, a noticeable decrease in the number of bacteria was observed after 30 minutes. In general, this method of water disinfection is comparable in result to boiling water or other home cleaning methods. True, it should be noted that the number of noroviruses in the water decreased slightly - alas, the technique is not universal.

However, cleaning with lemon juice and sunlight can be much more effective and safer than using chemicals and potentially hazardous substances like TiO 2 (titanium dioxide) or H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide).
