After all, I'm not from here
Krylov I.A.
Phraseologism: After all, I'm not from here.
Meaning: I do not need to be hypocritical, adapt, because I am a free person, independent of both power and other people's opinions (jokingly ironic).
Origin: From the fable "Parishioner" (1825) by I. A. Krylov (1769-1844). It speaks of a sermon that a preacher reads with great enthusiasm in the temple. At the same time, almost all of his listeners are crying with emotion. After the end of the service, one of the parishioners is delighted with the sermon and reproaches his neighbor: "What a pleasant gift! - // One of the listeners here said to another, - // What sweetness, heat! // How much he attracts the hearts of the people to goodness! // And you, neighbor, know, callous nature, / Why can't you see tears on you? / Or didn't you understand? - "Well, how not to understand! // Yes, what a cry for me to become: // After all, I'm not from the local parish." The plot of the fable by Krylov was taken from the anecdote "A Peasant from Another Parish", which was first published in "Companion and Interlocutor of Merry People" (1776), then in the collection "Joy in Boredom, or the Book of Joy and Reflection" (1778). In the latter, the plot was outlined as follows: "In a certain village, the priest, delivering a sermon in a clear style and sensitive expressions, brought the villagers listening to him to tears, everyone wept, except for one peasant. He was asked why he was not crying, to which he answered:" I am not of the local parish. "The "parish" is the area adjacent to the church where parishioners live. Usually believers visit only their own church. In the old days, persons belonging to a parish did not have the right to perform weddings, baptisms and other rites. The isolation of parish life was reflected in this anecdote, which formed the basis of Krylov's fable.
Random phraseology:
To be everywhere and nowhere.
Meaning:
1. About the ubiquitous and meticulous leader (jokingly ironic). 2. About some informal, secret organization, whose members act "on the ground" independently, but in accordance with the plans of this organization, for example, members of the Jesuit order, etc.
Origin:
From the "Epigrams" (book 7) of the Roman satirist poet Martial (Valery Martial, c. 40 - c. 104). |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Radio beacons track Android and iOS devices
14.12.2013
Various short range location services are all the rage right now. Companies present their versions of such systems. The most famous such service at the moment can be called Apple iBeacon.
However, everyone forgets that to determine the location, you need not only a smartphone with specially installed software, but also radio beacons that provide navigation. Qualcomm decided to remind about this by presenting such devices.
These radio beacons are called Gimbal. Currently, two types of such beacons are presented - the Gimbal Series 10 and Series 20. Gimbal Series 10 are ultra-compact radio beacons that will primarily be used in stores. Series 20 are slightly larger due to a different case design, which implies protection from adverse weather conditions. Thus, Series 20 can be used in open warehouses, parking lots and so on.
Gimbals currently only work with iOS7 and the iBeacon service, but Qualcomm said it will add support for Android devices very soon. Prices for lighthouses have already been announced. The Series 10 is only $5 if purchased in bulk, while the Series 20 will cost twice as much. The cost is quite acceptable, especially considering the fact that at first curious buyers will enter the store just like that, just to check the operation of iBeacon.
