Gadgets cause accelerated aging

Prolonged exposure to the bluish light that gadget screens emit damages the retina and brain cells. This conclusion was made by scientists at the University of Oregon in the United States.

The researchers tested how the body of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster would react to a 12-hour daily exposure to blue LED light. It turned out that those who were exposed to light radiation during the day or at night died earlier than insects in the control group, who were in the dark or in light with filtered blue rays. The flies in the experimental group showed damage to the retina and neurons of the brain, as well as disturbances in motor activity.

Some insects were mutants that did not develop eyes. However, even eyeless flies had brain damage. In general, blue light accelerated the aging process by influencing the activity of several genes involved in the development of a protective response to stress.

Inhospitable Antarctica in recent years has attracted not only winter explorers, but also tourists arriving on cruise ships. Botanists from the Republic of South Africa (Stellenbosch University) vacuumed the clothes, shoes and luggage of 33 tourists and 7100 professional polar explorers who visited Antarctica in 2007 and 2008.

On average, they found seeds of ten species of plants on each of the surveyed. Participants of scientific expeditions had five times more seeds than tourists, apparently because they are more often in contact with nature at work. The importation of seeds (according to estimates, tens of thousands are imported annually) poses a certain danger to the fragile circumpolar nature, especially since global warming is approaching the mainland.

In the vicinity of four polar research stations, annual bluegrass is already growing - a common cereal in the middle zone. Among randomly imported plants there are other cereals, as well as dandelions.
