car roof battery

26.10.2013

Volvo engineers have developed doors and a condenser roof that will replace the car's conventional electrical systems. The new technology will reduce the car's weight by 15% and add 130 kilometers to it.

Today, every major automaker offers hybrid cars to customers, and some offer all-electric cars. All these cars are built around lithium-ion batteries, usually in the form of a massive block placed at the bottom of the car. The extra weight of the battery reduces the fuel efficiency of hybrids and electric vehicles, and sometimes worsens their handling.

Volvo offers a completely new concept: the placement of batteries in the hood, doors and roof of the car. A prototype S80 equipped with a battery roof is currently being tested.

With conventional lithium-ion batteries, it is impossible to achieve the safety of a car of this design - a strong blow to the doors, hood and roof is very likely in the event of an accident and can lead to a fire in the car, chemical burns to passengers. However, there is no mention of lithium-ion batteries in the Volvo concept, instead it is planned to use innovative supercapacitors based on a combination of carbon fibers and polymer resin. Layers of these materials form an energy store that can be shaped to match the contours of the car body. Moreover, supercapacitors are not only safer than Li-ion, but also have an increased strength characteristic of carbon composites. Thus, the supercapacitor not only stores energy, but also serves as a power frame of the body, increasing the safety of passengers.

The battery body concept is very flexible: it can be used in both all-electric vehicles and hybrids. In the first, the batteries will be charged from the network, providing a range of up to 130 km. Such a car should be cheaper than current lithium-ion electric vehicles. In a hybrid car, the supercapacitors will be charged from the grid or during braking, and will replace the usual components of the car's 12-volt electrical system. The hybrid will be able to use "free" braking energy for subsequent acceleration of the car, which will save fuel.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Ultra-compact 4G network 07.06.2016

Nokia has unveiled a lightweight and ultra-compact 4G network solution based on a small cell that allows you to deploy secure mobile communications in minutes to provide life-saving services. The solution can provide voice, video and data transmission in emergency situations, in remote areas, at various events, and can also be used as an access point by operators, companies from various industries and public security agencies.

Nokia pioneered the development of small-scale networking equipment in the industry with the introduction of the Network in a Box solution last year. Continuing work on the concept of rapidly deployable networks has resulted in the Ultra Compact Network solution, which is based on small cell technology. The Ultra Compact Network provides secure indoor and outdoor 4G coverage up to 75 km for up to 400 users.

In remote and underserved areas, this solution will help increase capacity and coverage, and operators can use it to expand their macro networks through the ability to use cable, satellite and radio relay channels for signal transport.

For first responders, the Ultra Compact Network solution will provide video, telephone, and data communications in emergency situations in the event of a disruption to cellular networks. No roads are required for delivery to the site - the equipment fits in a backpack, and when conducting search and rescue operations, when extinguishing extensive forest fires or during floods, it can be lifted into the air on a drone or weather balloon.

Deployed in remote industrial sites such as mines, refineries or oil wells, the Ultra Compact Network will provide business-critical communications; Mobile operators can use it to quickly close coverage gaps, temporarily add capacity and coverage when traffic spikes during mass events such as outdoor music festivals.
