Phraseologism: Aesopian language.

Meaning: Allegorical language, full of omissions, allusions, allegories.

Origin: It comes from the name of the great fabulist of Ancient Greece, Aesop (VI century BC). Since Aesop was a slave and could not talk about the vices of those around him, he turned to the language of allegories, to the fabled form. The expression was made popular by the satirist writer Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889), who, more than any other Russian writer, suffered from censorship bans. The expression "Aesopian language" is found in a number of his works - "All the Year Round", "Unfinished Conversations", "In the Environment of Moderation and Accuracy", etc. The same writer came up with his synonym - "slave language", which is found in his satires " Little things in life" (1886-1887), etc.
