Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Through the stump-deck (to bring down).

Meaning: 1. Do smth. somehow, dishonestly, carelessly. 2. Indiscriminately, randomly. 3. Inconsistently, intermittently (simply disapproved).

Origin: There are two versions of the origin of this expression: 1) the expression arose among lumberjacks. Initially, the phraseologism was used in the form of a comparison - [to do smth.] how to bring down a deck through a stump, to bring down, as through a stump a deck, i.e. as inconvenient as dragging a thick log through a stump, 2) is associated with walking along windbreaks, where you go "over the stump into the deck", i.e., stepping over the next stump, you can get your foot into a rotten deck.

Random phraseology:

The blind lead the blind.

Meaning:

About bad leaders, leaders and the ignorant crowd obedient to them, who stand each other (iron., scorn.).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Attoclocks capable of measuring the time parameters of the movement of electrons 12.05.2018

Everything that happens at the atomic and molecular levels happens so fast that it cannot be felt by any human senses. For example, a tiny electron, in order to move from one atom to another during a chemical reaction, takes only a few hundred attoseconds. What is an attosecond? Take a second and divide it into a billion parts, and then divide one part into another billion smaller parts. An attosecond is 1*10^-18 seconds.

But, in order to understand what is happening in the invisible "universe" of quantum events, people need to be able to measure time intervals on an attosecond scale. And this is what new "atto-clocks" created by researchers from the SLAC Linear Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University are capable of. The new clock is based on an X-ray laser capable of generating pulses of several tens of attoseconds, which was previously used to capture video of events occurring at the molecular level.

However, capturing events related to quantum physics is fundamentally different from capturing events from the field of classical physics and chemistry. Previously, scientists lacked the ability not only to measure, but also to control the power of X-ray pulses. And too powerful pulses affected the fragile quantum state and the behavior of particles, which made it impossible to correctly interpret the data obtained.

The principles of atto-clock design were proposed by Swiss physicists about a decade ago. But only now the possibility of creating such a device, which is based on some equipment already available to the specialists of the SLAC laboratory, has begun to appear. The device has a diameter of 0.6 meters and is located inside a small vacuum chamber. The structure of the atto-clock includes 16 cylindrical sensors installed like spokes in a wheel.

The "heart" of an atto-clock is an atom or a molecule, which is also an object of research at the same time. This object is placed in the center of the circle formed by the sensors, and X-ray pulses are applied to it. The atom(s) is ionized and loses some of their electrons, which, under the influence of the electric field of the laser light, are directed towards the sensors and captured by one of them. "Catching" a free electron, scientists can calculate the exact value of the energy contained in the X-ray pulse, and the exact time of impact of this pulse on the object under study.
