Victory has a thousand fathers, and defeat is always an orphan

Publius Cornelius Tacitus
Publius Cornelius Tacitus

Phraseologism: Victory has a thousand fathers, and defeat is always an orphan.

Meaning: The culprit of failure, unlike the winner, does not seek publicity.

Origin: Phrase of the 35th President (1961-1963) of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963). This is how he commented (April 21, 1961) on the reaction in the United States to the failure of the American landing in the Bay of Pigs (Bay of Pigs) in Cuba. But this is only a new edition of a phrase known from ancient times. For example, the Roman historian Tacitus in his work "Agricola" wrote: "In every war [...] everyone attributes luck to himself, and the blame for misfortunes is laid on one" (translated by A. S. Bobovich). There is also an entry in the "Diary" of Italian Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano (1903-1944): "As usual, victory has a hundred fathers, and defeat is an orphan" (entry dated September 9, 1942, published in 1946).

Random phraseology:

Take rubbish out of the hut.

Meaning:

Disclose troubles, quarrels concerning only a narrow circle of people.

Origin:

The expression is associated with the ancient custom not to take garbage out of the hut, but to burn it (for example, in a furnace), since an evil person could allegedly send trouble on the owner of the hut by uttering special words over the garbage.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Glass to protect secrets 07.02.2005

British engineers have figured out how to protect information that can fly through window glass.

Computers in the office are now usually connected to each other not with wires, but with radio waves. And they easily pass through glass, which means that any attacker can gain access to confidential information.

Scientists at the University of Warwick have created a method for making glass that understands which radio signals can and cannot be emitted outside a building. To achieve this, an electrical circuit is applied to the glass - a tunable dipole grating. It is made using thin film technology from optically transparent components and freely transmits light. Such a lattice has three advantages over conventional, non-adjustable ones.

Firstly, it is possible to block exactly the frequency at which computers communicate with each other, and in which case this setting can be easily changed. Secondly, there is no need to develop a special grille for each window size - just one model is enough that adjusts to any size. Thirdly, it is possible to compensate for small errors that inevitably arise in the manufacture of the grating.
