Hurry to do good

Gaaz F.P.
Gaaz F.P.

Phraseologism: Hurry to do good.

Meaning: About the need for good deeds and the transience of life.

Origin: The words of the senior physician of the Moscow prison hospitals, Friedrich Josef (Fedor Petrovich) Gaaz (1780-1853). FJ Haas was born in Germany (Bad Münstereifel). In 1806 he signed an employment contract with Princess Repnina as a family doctor and came to Russia. He became famous not only as a skilled doctor, but also as a trustee of the poor and those incarcerated. He did a lot to alleviate the fate of Russian prisoners, he even invented other heavy shackles instead of the then accepted heavy shackles - light, not injuring legs. He tested them on himself, going through the stage with the prisoners, and achieved the use of his shackles instead of the previous ones. At his own expense, he organized a "hospital for the homeless", in which he settled himself. He sold all his personal property - a house in Moscow, an estate near Moscow and a cloth factory - to help those in need. When the "holy doctor" (as the prisoners called him) died, he was buried at public expense. The phrase "make haste to do good" is a quotation from F.J. Haas' French book Appel aux femmes (A call to women), published posthumously. These words are carved on the monument erected on his grave (Vvedenskoye, the former German cemetery in Moscow), as well as on the pedestal of the monument, which was erected to F.J. Gaaz (1909, sculptor N.A. Andreev) in Moscow.

Random phraseology:

He will stop a galloping horse, enter a burning hut.

Meaning:

About a brave, physically and morally strong, energetic woman (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

From the poem (part 1) "Frost, Red Nose" (1863) by N. L. Nekrasov (1821-1877). The poet writes about a Russian woman: "In the game, the equestrian will not catch her, // In trouble - she will not be afraid, - she will save: // He will stop the galloping horse, // He will enter the burning hut!" In 1960, the poet Naum Korzhavin (pseudonym of Naum Moiseevich Mandel, b. 1925) wrote "Variations from Nekrasov", verses from which became a playful and ironic continuation of Nekrasov's textbook lines: "But she would like something else - // Wear a wedding dress. .. // But the horses keep galloping and galloping, // And the huts are burning and burning."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
