In the first autumn cold, small pockets of ice crystals form in the water of Lake Teletskoye, which grow before our eyes. The thinnest pieces of ice appear; closing the edges, they ring and rustle. In a few hours, in frosty weather, the expanse of the lake is covered with thin, like a film, ice. The Altaians call this first ice "Karamys". If the "Verkhovka" begins in the morning, it breaks it completely, grinds it into crumbs, and the waves pile up on the shore a bluish, as if made of broken glass, ice shaft. But a day without wind is enough for the ice to get stronger, and then no wave can take it. It only bends to the beat of it, sometimes cracks, but no longer crumbles.

The ice on Lake Teletskoye is fabulously beautiful. It is wonderfully transparent, so that the bottom is visible through its armor at a depth of five to six meters. Plus, it's extremely smooth. So every year the locals receive a skating rink as a gift from nature, which no other city in the world has. Especially unusual sight happens at night. Mountains and stars are clearly reflected on the ice. You slide on skates, and it seems as if you are over a huge bottomless abyss. Even with a slight wind, it is not easy to move on such ice. It is enough to go out to the lake, as the wind picks up the skater and swiftly rushes wherever he pleases, along this ideal ice rink.

Unfortunately, most tourists see the lake only in summer. There are no words, the banks of Altyn-Kol, its sparkling water surface, waterfall rivers and cedar forests are beautiful and will give the traveler an unforgettable experience. But even those who have been to the lake in winter will never forget this trip to the enchanted ice palaces of the Snow Queen.

And how beautiful this taiga region is at the end of September! In stable clear weather, the water is still, like a mirror. The slopes of the hills are still covered with flowers at this time of the year. The motley cover of the mountains is reflected in the water, and if you take a photograph of the opposite coast, then it is impossible to distinguish where the coast is and where its reflection is.

Russian people first entered the lake in the 1633th century, shortly after the founding of the Tomsk prison. The Cossack Pentecostal Pyotr Sabinsky, sent by the Tomsk voivode, went to Altyn-Kol in XNUMX with his detachment. He imposed a tribute to the prince of Teletsky Mandrar and went down the Biya back to Tomsk. In those days, the local taiga was inhabited by the Altai tribe of Teles, and the Cossack called the lake Teles. Over time, this name has changed slightly and now sounds like Teletskoye.

The local name of the lake is associated with the Altai legend about gold, which was found in the surrounding mountains by brave horsemen. But the precious metal brought only strife, resentment and grief to their tribe. And then, so that gold would no longer harm anyone, the daredevils threw it from the high mountain Altyntu ("Golden Mountain") into the lake, which since then has received the name Altyn-Kol.

In these parts, nature has settled nearby and high-altitude tundra with poor lichens, and alpine meadows, and taiga, where in summer you can even get lost ... in the grass. Thickets of grass in some places reach a height of three or four meters and can hide a rider on horseback with a head ... And on the Belinsky terrace in the southern part of the lake coast you can even find a real feather grass steppe.

In the mountain taiga, the swift-footed roe deer, the busy squirrel, the nimble chipmunk, and the proud red deer deer live freely. Here you can meet a handsome sable, and the owner of the taiga - a bear. Islet, near Cape Ayran. On the shores of Lake Teletskoye there are long-lived trees, whose age has exceeded six hundred years! Cedar - the basis of life for the inhabitants of the local forests. Squirrels and sable, nutcrackers, crossbills, chipmunks feed on its nuts. Yes, and the bear will not refuse to eat nuts.

The waterfalls on the rivers in the basin of Lake Teletskoye are amazing, picturesquely picturesque and incredibly diverse. The highest of them - Big Hump - is located ten kilometers from the coast and falls from a cliff in a narrow gorge in two jumps with a total height of twenty meters. And the most beautiful - the Korbu waterfall - is located on the river of the same name, just a hundred meters from its confluence with the lake.

This beautiful waterfall, without exaggeration, can be considered one of the main attractions of these places. A twelve-meter powerful jet of Korbu flows down the surface of a dark green slate rock, giving the impression of an iridescent malachite bell. A semicircle of a rainbow in a cloud of spray above the waterfall completes this marvelous picture. A small motor ship plying the lake specially lands at the mouth of the Korbu River so that travelers can see this masterpiece of nature.

Of course, Lake Teletskoye is not the whole Altai. This huge mountainous country, striking in contrasts of landscapes, is infinitely beautiful and enchants the traveler with the variety of its landscapes.

Here you can see dry, semi-desert intermountain basins - the Chuiskaya and Kuraiskaya steppes, and the high ridges of the Chuisky and Katunsky Belki covered with snow and glaciers, very similar to the Alps and almost not inferior to them in height, and the frantic run of rapids rivers in the rocky canyons of the Katun, Chulyshman and Abakan, and sparse larch taiga, similar to a park, and dark, almost black, spruce-fir wilds, littered with windbreak, and the jubilant flowering of alpine meadows.

But everyone who has visited Altai will agree that in all this variety of natural beauties there is one corner that unites all the colors of Altai, and at the same time unlike any of its regions. This is a unique place - a bottomless blue bowl framed by green cedar forests, mighty mountains and sonorous waterfall rivers - the famous Teletskoye Lake.
