Worse than bitter radish

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Worse than bitter radish.

Meaning: Very much, unbearably annoying (simple).

Origin: In Russia, radish, like turnips, was one of the everyday foods. Especially often radish was eaten during long fasts, and then the radish was especially annoying.

Random phraseology:

El Dorado.

Meaning:

A symbol of untold wealth, a dream country that promises a happy, carefree life.

Origin:

From Spanish: "El Dorado". Translation: "Gilded (sprinkled with gold)". So the Spanish conquistador Martinez called the mythical Indian state of South America, where, according to the ideas of the Spanish conquerors, gold was in abundance and one could quickly get rich. He even gave a description of this country, where he allegedly lived for seven months in the city of Manoa, which is ruled by a king named Moxo, who lives in fantastic luxury. These stories formed the basis of the legend of the "country of gold" - Eldorado, which was unsuccessfully sought by both the Spaniards and expeditions from other countries until the 1826th century. The last of these is an expedition sent (1759) by an English financial company. Its members even tried to drain Lake Guatavita in search of gold. The British believed that the country of Eldorado should be located in the region of this lake. Apparently, such ideas were based on vague information that had come down to them about the religious rites of the Indian tribes that inhabited modern Colombia, when the leader (cacique) traveled on certain days to the sacred lake Guatavita, showered himself with golden sand, making a sacrifice, after which he entered the water of the lake and washed off the gold. Of course, the search for the country of Eldorado ended in failure, but they enriched science with new geographical and ethnographic observations. The word "Eldorado" became popular after the publication of the novel "Candide" (1694) by the French writer-educator Voltaire (pseudonym Francois Marie Arouet, 1778-XNUMX), who offered the reader his description of this mythical country.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Walking is good for the brain 05.05.2017

Ernest Greene and colleagues at New Mexico Highland University have found that simply walking activates your brain - hitting your foot while walking sends pressure waves through your arteries that significantly alter and can increase blood flow to your brain.

Until recently, it was believed that the blood supply to the brain (cerebral blood flow or CVD) is automatically regulated by the body and more or less independent of changes in blood pressure caused by exercise or stress. It has previously been determined that the impact of the foot during running (4-5 G) causes significant retrograde (reverse) waves through the arteries, which are synchronized with heart rate and stride speed to dynamically regulate blood flow to the brain.

In this study, researchers used a non-invasive ultrasound method to measure carotid internal velocity waves and artery diameters to calculate cerebral blood flow in both hemispheres of the brain of 12 healthy young adults while standing still and walking uniformly at a speed of 1 m/sec.

It turned out that while the pressure on the foot during walking is weaker than during running, walking still generates large pressure waves in the body, which significantly increase blood flow to the brain. Although the effect of walking on cerebral blood flow was less significant than that caused by running, it was more pronounced than that observed during cycling, which does not affect the foot at all.

"New evidence now suggests that blood flow to the brain is highly dynamic and directly dependent on cyclic aortic pressures that interact with retrograde pressure impulses from exposure to the legs," the authors state. pressure on pedals, walking and running. It is hypothesized that these actions may optimize perfusion, function, and overall sense of well-being during exercise."

"It's amazing that it took us so long to finally measure this apparent hydraulic effect on cerebral blood flow," explained Ernest Greene. rhythm (about 120 per minute) when we move vigorously.
