Phraseologism: The Road to Calvary.

Meaning: A number of difficult life tests (jokingly-iron.).

Origin: The expression goes back to the ancient belief of Christians in the walking of the souls of dead sinners through torments, or through "trials", for forty days, when demons subject them to all kinds of tortures. The expression is known in Ancient Russia of the XII century. according to the well-known legend "The Virgin's Passage through the Torments", which is a translation from the Greek original. In Soviet times, the expression gained a second life after the publication of the trilogy by A.N. Tolstoy "Walking through the torments" (1922-1941) about the fate of the Russian intelligentsia during the revolution and the Civil War.
