Utopia

Thomas More
Thomas More

Phraseologism: Utopia.

Meaning: A common noun for all sorts of unrealistic, ideological, complacent social projects (iron.).

Origin: Initially, the expression meant a fantastic, fictional, non-existent country. The word became popular thanks to the English thinker, Chancellor of England Thomas More (1478-1535), who published (1516) in Latin an essay entitled "On the best state of the state and on the new island of Utopia." In it, the writer painted a picture of a society of social harmony and general well-being. The name of the island is formed from two Greek words - the negation of "not" and the noun "place" - and is translated either as "non-place" or "a place that does not exist anywhere."

Random phraseology:

On one honest word.

Meaning:

About something that is barely holding on, loosely attached, about to fall, etc. (a button, a car fender, a fence board, etc.).

Origin:

The original source is an English song about military pilots "Comin" in on a wing and a prayer", written (1943) by composer J. McHugh to the words of Harold Adamson (1906-1980). Was very popular in the USA and Great Britain during World War II. After the song was translated (1945) into Russian (under the name "Bombers") by S. Voloshin and T. Sikorskaya, it became popular in the Soviet Union, and the expression "on one word of honor" ("keep on one word of honor") has firmly entered the modern Russian language.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Plastic for household recycling 20.08.2021

San Francisco-based startup Intropic Materials has developed a plastic that can be composted at home. The new material differs in that it is able to decompose very quickly, it takes from several days to several weeks, depending on the decomposition conditions and the state of the compost, including its temperature.

The fundamental difference between the new degradable plastic is that it already contains special enzymes, thanks to which it decomposes. Typically, such enzymes are produced by microorganisms, thereby triggering the decomposition process. But in the new plastic, the enzymes are activated on their own when conditions of temperature and humidity favor it. As a result, the material begins to quickly break down, eventually turning into fertilizer (of course, if it is put into a compost heap).

The new plastic, which biodegrades quickly, could be very useful for diners and other similar businesses. After all, this material can not only be composted, but also recycled, since it breaks down into monomers. Enterprises will be able to create local systems for the decomposition of this plastic in order to send monomers for recycling in the future. As a result, it will be possible to make new plastic from such raw materials, so that the degradable material will support the full cycle of its use and recycling.

It is planned to confirm the ability of the new plastic to decompose in the laboratory, and then it will be necessary to test this material in real conditions. At the same time, they plan to start with those materials that are usually not recyclable, primarily with plastic bags and films.

The new plastic could be especially useful in countries that don't have a well-developed composting infrastructure, as it can decompose even at home.
