Ultimate weapon
Robert Shackley
Phraseologism: Ultimate weapon.
Meaning: A weapon (power) against which there is no protection.
Origin: For the first time, this expression was introduced into wide circulation by Hitler's propaganda on the eve of the collapse of Nazi Germany in order to raise the spirit of the army and the population. This was due to the work on the creation of atomic weapons, which were carried out at that time in the Third Reich. After the war, the expression began to be actively used in England and the USA - Absolut Weapon. This began with the book by American political scientists Frederick Dunn (b. 1893-?) and Bernard Brody (b. 1910-?) "The Ultimate Weapon: Atomic Energy and World Order" (1946). The expression gained wide popularity after a short story (1953, Russian translation -1960) by the American science fiction writer Robert Sheckley was published under that title.
Random phraseology:
Swap a cuckoo for a hawk.
Meaning:
Choose the worst from the bad, act imprudently, thoughtlessly (folk iron.).
Origin:
The expression goes back to Slavic ideas about the seasonal transformation of a cuckoo into a hawk. According to mythology, the hawk is the receptacle of an evil soul. Wed the lost meaning of the word cuckoo "sinister person". |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Our sun's twins discovered
13.10.2006
Australian astronomers, working at an observatory near Canberra, discovered two stars with characteristics very close to our central star.
Like the Sun, both stars are about 26 light-years from the center of the Galaxy. They are about 1% hotter and rotate slightly faster than the Sun, which means they are about half a billion years younger. But even in such a time, planets with life, possibly intelligent, could have arisen around these stars.
