Graveyard Tranquility

Johann Friedrich Schiller
Johann Friedrich Schiller

Phraseologism: The tranquility of the cemetery.

Meaning: On the lack of criticism in a totalitarian state.

Origin: Words from the play "Don Carlos" (act. 3, yavl. 10) by Johann Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). The expression was very popular in Europe throughout the 1848th century. Thus, the participants in the revolution of XNUMX, which affected many European countries, called "the calm of the cemetery" the calm that monarchical governments established through cruel repressions. Approximately in the same, ironic, sense, the expression is used today.

Random phraseology:

Business idleness. Business bum.

Meaning:

A joke paradox.

Origin:

This paradox is found in various formulations by ancient authors. For example, Aristophanes (c. 446-385 BC - "lazy activity" ("Frogs"), Horace (65-8 BC) - "active inaction" (Letters 1, 11, Phaedra (I century AD) - "leisure activities", in Seneca (4-65 AD) "restless inactivity" ("On the peace of the soul", 12), "an idle occupation" (" On the brevity of life ", 11), "inactive business" (ibid., 12). This antithesis, following ancient literature, was assimilated by the world literature of modern times. The founder of the new Danish literature, Ludwig Golberg (1684-1754), belongs to the comedy "Business Loafer" , in imitation of which in Germany in 1743 a comedy by Johann Elias Schlegel (1718-1749) appeared under the same name.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. NEC has declared war on pirated batteries 29.07.2004

With the growing popularity of digital cameras and mobile phones, the number of manufacturers of "non-native" batteries that do not meet quality and safety standards has increased. As a result, according to the original developers, devices deteriorate.

NEC Electronics has introduced a new software for microcontrollers of mobile devices that determines the authenticity of batteries. According to the Japanese company, its development is the most progressive through the use of its own Cipherunicorn-5 technology.

The advantages of the technology are 5x smaller code size and 18x speed increase compared to analogues. Thus, the program can be used in any standard 8-bit microcontroller. The code written by the company's programmers will simply not allow such batteries to work. The battery is prompted for encrypted data, which, if not matched, will result in a failure to operate from the "wrong" power source.

The speedup was achieved by using a symmetric encryption key, which can be used for both encryption and decryption. The software has some protection functions against key cracking. NEC will use the program in their 8-bit 78K0/78K0S microcontrollers and sell it to other manufacturers.

In Japan, protected cameras will appear by the end of the year, and by 2007, according to NEC's plans, there will be 50 million of them. If the technology performs well, NEC will launch printers protected in this way and other peripherals that require cartridges and power supplies.
