Bullet - fool, bayonet - well done

Suvorov A.V.
Suvorov A.V.

Phraseologism: The bullet is a fool, the bayonet is well done.

Meaning: At present, in the new conditions of warfare, these words are used ironically, as a phrase-symbol of harmful conservatism, hatred, neglect of modern military technologies, etc.

Origin: From the "Suzdal Institution" manual for combat training of troops, written (1796) by commander Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov (1730-1800) and published (1806) under the title Science of Victory. Original: Save a bullet for three days, and sometimes for a whole campaign, as there is nowhere to get it. Shoot rarely, but accurately, if hard with a bayonet. The bullet will miss, the bayonet will not miss: the bullet is a fool, the bayonet is well done. The same idea of A. V. Suvorov is found in another of his aphorisms: "One person can stab three with a bayonet, where there are four, and a hundred bullets fly into the air" (Zavety Suvorov. M., 1943).

Random phraseology:

Aesopian language.

Meaning:

Allegorical language, full of omissions, allusions, allegories.

Origin:

It comes from the name of the great fabulist of Ancient Greece, Aesop (VI century BC). Since Aesop was a slave and could not talk about the vices of those around him, he turned to the language of allegories, to the fabled form. The expression was made popular by the satirist writer Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889), who, more than any other Russian writer, suffered from censorship bans. The expression "Aesopian language" is found in a number of his works - "All the Year Round", "Unfinished Conversations", "In the Environment of Moderation and Accuracy", etc. The same writer came up with his synonym - "slave language", which is found in his satires " Little things in life" (1886-1887), etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

living concrete 24.01.2020

Scientists at the University of Colorado have created living concrete that is teeming with photosynthetic bacteria. They can grow and even regenerate - just like a living organism.

The new material is a mixture of gelatin, sand and cyanobacteria. The resulting structure was able to regenerate three times after the researchers tore it apart.

The living concrete, which Colorado scientists have made in collaboration with DARPA, initially has a sickly green color that fades as bacteria die off.

"It really looks like Frankenstein stuff," joked UC Boulder engineer and project leader Will Srubar.

Even when the green tint disappears, the bacteria continue to live for a few more weeks. Under the right conditions, they can be "rejuvenated" and become active again, splicing cracks and other defects within the structure. DARPA is particularly interested in such materials, which are planned to be used to build structures in remote desert regions and possibly even on planets like Mars.

If living concrete is put into industrial production, it will indeed significantly simplify the life of space agencies. "Instead of spending millions of dollars to carry heavy building materials into space, we'll just bring life there - and grow whatever we need," says Srubar.
