There will be no day, and sacred Troy will perish

Homer
Homer

Phraseologism: There will be no day, and sacred Troy will perish.

Meaning: 1. No matter how strong any state (someone's rule) may seem, but what should happen, in accordance with historical patterns, will inevitably happen. 2. It is also used in a playfully ironic form: if something undesirable can happen, it will certainly happen.

Origin: From the poem "Iliad" (Song 4) by the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC).

Random phraseology:

The ashes of Claes knock on my heart.

Meaning:

A reminder of the dead and a call for their revenge.

Origin:

From the book "The Legend of Ulenspiegel" (1867) by the Belgian writer Charles De Coster (1827-1879), the words of its main character - the young Thiel Ulenspiegel. The background against which the main events of the book unfold (the first Russian translation of 1915) is the struggle of the Geuzes, Dutch patriots, with the Spanish invaders. Young Thiel becomes a gueuz after the Spanish Inquisition burned his father, Klaas. The day after Claas's death, his widow and son climb the burnt-out fire and take some ashes from the place of execution. At home, Til’s mother sews a bag from black and red pieces of fabric, fills it with the ashes of the executed and hangs it around her son’s neck with the words: “Let this ashes, which was the heart of my husband, in red, like his blood, and in black, like our sorrow, will be forever on your chest, like a flame of revenge on his executioners." A particle of his father's ashes gives Til the strength to fight enemies for the freedom of his native Flanders. Every time before a responsible step, he repeats: "The ashes of Klaas knock on my heart."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Recharging through the asphalt 01.03.2004

The authorities of Genoa (Italy), fighting exhaust air pollution, decided to put a battery electric bus on one of the routes in the center.

The choice fell on the new buses of the Italian company Eco Power Technology, which are recharged at the final stops without being connected to wires. Three electric buses run along the 2400-meter route. At the final stop, where the bus arrives approximately every 20 minutes, an induction coil with a diameter of one meter is embedded in the asphalt, in which an alternating current with a frequency of 20 kilohertz circulates.

The same coil is lowered from under the bottom of the car, and the distance between them can be up to 40 centimeters. An in-cab monitor shows the driver how exactly the two coils match up. Charging takes 10 minutes. Rain and snow do not interfere with the transmission of energy.

Previously, the same system was adopted in one of the cities of New Zealand, and after Genoa, perhaps Turin will acquire it.
