Meaning: The social status of a person imposes special duties on him and does not allow him to behave the way he might have wanted.

Origin: From French: "La noblesse oblige". Literally: "The nobility obliges" (noblesse - nobility, from French noble - noble). From the book Sayings and Thoughts (1808) by the French writer Duke Gaston de Levy (1764-1830).
