Struggle for existence

Charles Robert Darwin
Charles Robert Darwin

Phraseologism: Struggle for existence.

Meaning: Fight for life.

Origin: From English: Struggle for life. The phrase became widely known after the publication (1859) of the sensational historical work "On the Origin of Species" by the English naturalist Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882). Its full title is: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Species in the Struggle for Existence." But Darwin is more of a popularizer than an author of this expression. In a historical sketch with which he begins his work, as well as in a letter (1857) to the American botanist Aza Gray, he himself names those who introduced this phrase into scientific circulation before him - scientists A. de Candol, W. Herbert, C. Lyle , Ch.-U. Wells. But even earlier, the scientist G. Malthus used this phrase in his "Experiment on the Foundations of Population" (1798). And before him, in 1710, the famous German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) spoke about "the struggle of all kinds of creatures claiming to exist" in his work "Theodicy".

Random phraseology:

Feast of Disobedience.

Meaning:

About the spirit of contradiction, which manifests itself in any specific deeds (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

The name of the story-tale "Feast of Disobedience" (1971) by the Soviet poet Sergei Mikhalkov (1913-2009).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Bioenergy from grape shoots 20.01.2024

A research team from the University of Jaén in Spain and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil has confirmed the possibility of extracting hydrogen from grapevine shoots using an environmentally friendly process that does not rely on fossil fuels. This work brings new meaning to waste from the wine industry, providing a solution to create clean energy.

The researchers' work not only confirms the effectiveness of the process of producing hydrogen from grape shoots, but also opens up new prospects for creating clean and sustainable energy using biomass from the wine industry.

Grape shoots, which make up a significant portion of winemaking waste, were previously used mainly for compost or as a source of fuel. However, scientists propose an alternative use for these wastes based on their biological treatment with enzymes.

The biological enzyme pretreatment process appeared to be the best option for industrial hydrogen production. Unlike chemical and physical methods, this process is not only more environmentally friendly, since it does not involve waste processing and does not emit toxic compounds, but also increases hydrogen production by almost 250%.

The researchers call for further techno-economic and environmental assessments of the process. They intend to analyze the environmental impact of large-scale use of fermentation plants and assess the economic feasibility of creating a biorefinery based on grape branches.
