Ate - you can sleep. Sleep - you can eat

Erdman N.R.
Erdman N.R.

Phraseologism: Ate - you can sleep. Sleep - you can eat.

Meaning: Quoted as an ironic commentary on the inactive, "vegetarian" way of life.

Origin: From the cartoon "Thumbelina" (1964). Stage director L. Amalrik, script by playwright Nikolai Robertovich Erdman (1902-1970). In the cartoon (the words of the Frog, addressed to her son the Frog, who wanted to marry Thumbelina): "Well, eat, now you can sleep. Well, sleep. [...] Now you can eat."

Random phraseology:

Piece of paper.

Meaning:

About a document that someone considers legally null and void (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

From German: Ein Fetzen Papier (Papierfetzen). The words of the German Reich Chancellor (1909-1917) Theobald Bethmap-Hollweg (1856-1921), who (August 4, 1914) in a conversation with the British Ambassador Eduard Goschen called the international treaty that guaranteed the neutrality of Belgium. The reason for the conversation was the events of the beginning of the First World War: on August 3, 1914, German troops invaded Belgium - in violation of their own obligations. The next day, Great Britain presented Germany with an ultimatum: if the German side did not withdraw troops from neutral Belgium, Great Britain would start a war against Germany. In the evening of the same day, the British Ambassador E. Goshen came to the German Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg for an answer to the ultimatum and heard a firm "no". He recalled the treaty that Germany had signed and which she promised to abide by. Then the words that went down in history sounded. The Chancellor snapped in annoyance: "So, because of a piece of paper, you intend to go to war with your kindred nation?" To which the ambassador remarked: "Yes, but this scrap is signed by England ..." The war became inevitable. On the night of August 4-5, Great Britain declared war on Germany. On the 8th of the same month, Edward Goshen sent to London a report on his conversation with the Chancellor, mentioning in particular the "scrap of paper." Later, this expression was included in the "blue book", which was released by the British government to present its position in this war to the world and the public. The words were picked up by the press of the Entente countries and became widely known as a symbol of a cynical attitude towards international treaties and international law in general.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Bionic organ of vision 07.04.2013

UCLA professor of bioengineering, Wentai Liu, who has been doing research in this area for two decades, has created a device that the inventor himself calls "the first bionic eye for the blind."

The official name of the product, which is a retinal prosthesis, is Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System. The group of specialists involved in the project, led by the professor, hopes that their work will help elderly people who have lost their sight due to age-related changes or diseases that cause the destruction of light-sensitive receptors in the retina.

The central component of the prosthesis is a miniature but powerful enough chip implanted in the retina and replacing the signals of damaged photoreceptors with its own. Argus II receives video signals from a miniature camera built into the goggles. To be more precise, first, the camera data is sent to a microcomputer attached to the patient's wrist, and after the necessary processing, they are transmitted wirelessly to a chip implanted in the eye. The task of the chip is to stimulate the nerve endings with electrical impulses that travel through the optic nerve to the visual area of the cerebral cortex.

As stated, patients with the Argus II prosthesis gain the ability to read texts in large print, distinguish objects and their movement, even see the contours and some details of faces. So far, the picture is far from perfect, since the artificial retina has a resolution of only 60 points, negligible compared to the resolution of a healthy eye, but for people who are blind, this is an incredible breakthrough. The first patient to take part in clinical trials was a seventy-year-old man who, at the age of twenty, completely lost his sight due to an illness.

The UCLA research team is currently testing two more prototypes, which have a resolution of 256 and 1026 pixels, hoping to fit them into the same dimensions as the first version of the prosthesis. Over time, scientists expect to add the ability to color vision and move the camera directly into the eye.
